Can't decide.. 95% of the time we drive it like a car, 5% tow a 5th wheel.. probably 10,000 pounds loaded... Currently have a Dodge 2500 diesel automatic.. like it other than blowing U-joints and hate the local dealer... love the way it handles in town.. and the diesel pulls like a freight train... but it is a DODGE!!! Ford.. more heavy duty.. Ford quality... so what to buy??

2007 Dodge Diesel SLT quad cab, short box 4X4 AT and loaded with 10,000 miles or

2006 Ford Diesel XLT Crew cab, one ton, short box, 4X4.. loaded with 20,000 miles

They are equal in condition and equipment.. like the one ton for towing and it is a sport interior.. the Dodge will need over loads..

Just five words

Say no to the 6.0

Personally, you would have to pay me to drive one. Way too many problems. Almost everyone I know has had a ton of problems.

From what I've read removing the EGR and installing headstuds is considered mandatory. And no programmers.

I like the 05 and up Ford truck, but the 6.0 just scares me.

If your set on a Ford, go for 99-03 7.3 or 08-10 6.4.

Disadvantages are the 7.3 is low on power and the 6.4 is low on fuel mileage. Pick your poison.

Or swap a Cummins into a Ford. Have seen quite a few. Fit quite nicely in the 05 Ford I saw.

That being said I've been really happy with 03 Cummins. Needs balljoints at 75k but what do you expect from a 7500 lb truck with a lift and 35s? No complaints here.

What year Cummins do you currently have?

Also, is the 07 Cummins a 5.9 or 6.7. 6.7 gets worse mileage but has the sweet 6 speed auto.

My dad has the cummins with the new auto. Very nice for towing plus the jake break is also a nice little add on, works great when in the hills. Never been to thrilled about the fords but just my opinion.

I don't own a diesel truck but it will be my next truck and that will be within the next 5 months. I have always had a ford truck but its been gas and I swear by fords (As all my dads company trucks are fords which is about 35 trucks and they are all work horses) However it seems that Ford diesels from 03-05/06 have been problematic. I think that Ford makes the best all around truck, Good power, good interiorer and strong chassis. However It breaks my heart to say that my next truck will be a Dodge Cummins and strictly for the motor. I think that the quality of the exterior such as body panels and such on dodges dent easily and can't handle what a ford could. However the 5.9 cummins motor is the best diesel motor out there. I'm buying the truck strictly for the motor and thats it. I'm sure I will be pissed about being a dodge owner for everything but that cummins...at least thats what I'm hoping. So I'd say go with the Dodge but if you get a Ford then more power to ya.

Whats a cumminGs??

I've had 3 Dodge with the CTD. I've had one GMC with the Duramax/Allison.

Either I had a lemon with that GMC, or they are gutless. I sure know mine was, when compared to my Dodge/Cummins. I had to put a tuner on mine to get it to be similar to the power my stock 99 CTD had. Very disapointed in the GMC product, even more dissapointed with the GM attitude with a recall issue.

I just had this similar chat with a buddy of mine. When it comes to ergonomics, that is each persons personal decision. Everyone had different taste.

IF you want to pull with this, the inline-6 engine platform is a superior platform to the V-8, since torque is what you need/want. The I-6 by design offers more torque than a V-design, given same displacement, bore/stroke, etc. So, in that manner, the Cummins platform has a fundamental advantage.

For stock height ride, nobody beats the GM for riding nice for the bulk of the time if you drive it like a car. But, if you put a lift on it, it's all out the window, and the solid axles of the new Ford and Dodges are easy, and strong. I would suggest that you put airbags on either choice, it's nice to have the added stability, even if you don't require the help with the load weight. It's a cheap bonus.

Yes, the Cummins in the ford would be a nice package. All that being said, I'm quite happy with the rest of the truck of the Dodge. In 06, the AT wasn't too bad either. (sure, there are improvments to be had).

Just my opinion...

Hmm........tough choice really. With the Dodge, you have a mediocre four door with a great power plant. With the Ford you have a much better truck with a mediocre at best power plant.
If you are willing to dump head studs and an egr delete on the Ford, buy it.
If not, buy the Dodge.

Drove the 06 Ford again tonight.. nice truck but the power just is not there compared to the Dodge (this truck is cherry very nice)..

Dave Smith threw us a difference that was better than we were expecting.. so going to go with the 08 Dodge with the new automatic.. . re the GMC/Chev.. they just are slugs for power... great cab and ergo.. but that does not pull the trailer... thanks for the feedback

If the Dodge has the 6.7 and most of your driving is start/stop driving like a car you will want to do the deletes or you will hate it.

Power Joke 6.0 or cummings

Where do I begin, had a 7.3 great motor under powered till programed then plan on purchasing a bd tranny or suncoast to handle programmer.Traded 7.3 for a 04 6.0 i owned truck for one year sat in shop for 30 days not consecutive turbo, tranny, fuel pump relay, injectors, egr valve, ford took the truck back (LEMON LAW)! Ford gave me a 2005 6.0 brand new again and it was like a broken record all over again! My dealer finally told me get rid of it ford is going broke over 6.0 liter find out later they have a class action lawsuit against them for this motor should have jumped on board but sick of dealing with this company will never own a ford product as long as i live. Bought a 07 5.9 mega cab will never look back bullet proof the fit and finish isnt as good as a chev or ford but when i go to hit the key i know it will run!! You deceide shouldnt take you long to figure this one out!

neither, i'd get a 07 gmc 3500 4dr with an lbz duramax, got one before they f'd up everything with the dpf

I agree with this. The Ford 6.0 is a dice roll whether you'll get a good one or a nightmare. The Dodge has a crappy, cheap interior with the most horribly uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in. I would definetly do a GM before either one....but that's just me.

I have a 06 F-250 6.0L with 53000 on it. Only issue i have had is a bad FICM around 45000 miles. Two other family members have the same truck and have had only a few electrical (electronic) issues.

The 6.7 was designed to work hard. The EGR/DPF system needs to run under load to keep "flowing" the exhaust and reburning the particles of diesel exhaust or they will collect in the DPF and over time will clog it no matter how many times in goes into regen mode. If this engine gets driven like a daily driver you will have some problems with it if you do not do the deletes. It's not if....it's when this system will fail on you without the deletes, it's that simple. The 6.7 was a poor attempt by Cummins to comply with the strict EPA mandates being put to all manufaturers. Any engine produced from 2008 on has been manufatured with like systems but the Cummins 6.7 reburns it's exhaust through the engine first and kills milage and performance without mods unless you just plain work the sh!t out of it.

Invest in a programmer like Bullydog with the mobile de-soot mode. You won't have a problem, we've yet to hear of a daily driver 6.7L plugging up around here and I've sold quite a few for them.

Stay with the Cummins, the 6.0L will make you wanna shoot yourself in the head for buying it. I wasn't impressed with my 05 Duramax, to me it was a gutless turd.

6.4 Sparton chip 210 or 275 tune and never look back. 7.3 was a great setup with a chip as well.

6.0 is a pile of crap but some love them.

The new Fords are like a vault when you close the door very well built trucks just hate the new filter and crap thus the reason for the Sparton.

You definitely need to ditch the DPF on the 6.7 CTD and do the EGR block-off, and add a Smarty programmer, it turns it into a whole different truck. Much better fuel mileage, more power and no stinking regen, add the fooler plugs for the DPF. Check out the Cummins forum for all the info. Now as to other trucks, the 6.0 is a POS even with a lot of work done to it and pulling the cab off to pull the motor is just insult to injury. I have had 2 Duramax's the 05 3500 was a fantastic truck and I should have kept it but I traded it in for the late model 07 for the new body style, needless to say I have an 08 Dodge now. GMC has a great ride and plenty of power but the new D-Max sucks fuel like it was sponsored by OPEC. The 5.9 24 valve CTD I had was also a great truck as well as the 7.3 P-Stroke. I have high hopes for the new Ford motor but am not cool with all the EPA BS and the fact it will be Urea injected, Sh*t they are Diesels and pollute way less than gassers, use a less refined fuel, and last a lot longer. The EPA needs to stop dicking with our trucks. Anyway the Dodge will treat you better than the 6.0 Ford in the long run, I just wish the bodies were not made of recycled tinfoil, look at it wrong and they seem to dent.
