Ford Diesel Engine Options

Can anyone give some thoughts on why I should get one or the other? Ford now offers a high output power stroke and a 4 valve OHV power stroke now. I assume the high output is better somehow, but it is $4,000 CDN more than the other.

If the high output is just better on acceleration for passing, then I'd probably be fine with the OHV. Would the 4 valve OHV engine get better fuel mileage?

Thanks

The HO has a little more juice when pulling heavy loads. When empty or with a small trailer I can’t tell much difference between the non-ho but with 15-20k the ho is noticeable.

I have a 2024 high output tremor, drove both the standard and high output before buying and there’s a difference but not huge, I’m guessing has more to do with the 3.55 gearing in the tremor vs the 3.31 that the standard output truck I test drove had. In the past 5000 miles I’ve gone through about 9 gallons of DEF.

The HO has 1200lb-ft torque and the standard has 1050lb-ft. 25HP difference I think. HO has liquid cooled turbo housing for when you're really pulling hard. The standard version got 90% of the engine upgrades the HO did to increase durability with the extra torque output.

I've heard Ford limits torque in the first couple gears of both versions, so you won't feel a big difference taking off from a stop light. Like others said I think if you were towing really heavy is where the difference would be most noticeable. TFL Truck's Ike Gauntlet tests of both were only a few seconds apart from each other.

I personally wouldn't spring the money for the HO.
