Forced to buy 600 RMK

A buddy of mine wrecked a rental sled this weekend in Grand Lake CO its a 2007 600 RMK 144" with 3000 miles on it. He tweaked both rails and may have slightly and I stress slightly bent the tunnel. The sled I ride is in much worse shape. The sled retal shop states is 2200 to fix the rails...rails are 200 a piece in town. If the tunnel is bent it will be 4500 to fix or 4200 to buy wrecked. What should we do? We need to decide by 9am tomorrow.....

i have seen this before, a buddy fell of his sled and it slammed into a second sled and it was cheeper to buy the sled and fix it and resale it. what is the market to repair value?

Did you get pictures of the damage? $2200 for rear suspension work is way high. Heck, they could buy a complete factory rear suspension for less than repairs. A bent tunnel can be pricey depending on what shop rates are. I don't know what they are charging for parts and labor, but the estimate they gave seems very high. But, then again, without pics of the damage it's hard to say which way to go. If they are sticking to thier guns on repair costs, then by all means, pay the 4200 save the extra 300 bucks and ride the machine-as-is the rest of the season.

Damage

How did the rails get bent? Did he crash or was it from jumping? Where is the tunnel supposed to be bent? Do you have any pictures?

With only 300 dollars difference. I would go ahead and buy. Fix it and sell it for what you have in it.
You should be able to sell it for 5k. At least you won't loose too much that way.

If rented with a credit card, you CC sometimes carries renters insurance..
check with them... if they don't cover it, then be prepared to counter offer
do a rough estimage of how much you think they've earned off this sled.
and adjust against current market value.

The rental company OWNS the sled your buddy F---d it up. What would you do if it was your sled? I would want MY shop to fix it and your bud pay the bills. Now I definitely think your getting bent over for the prices your mentioning. That sled with those miles is probably only worth $5000.00 there are o bunch for sell here that are in mint shape for $6000.00. Good luck.

I just rented an 08 REV600 from On the Trail and signed a CC slip for $8,000.
I wasn't too worried about it as it was my wife's rental and she never screws up.

Anyway, they seem to think the sled is worth $8,000.

My 310# riding buddy has an 06 RMK600, hit a rock last year, bent the tunnel and blew out the rear shock.

Alan Bender at Spirit Lake fixed the tunnel on an insurance claim for $5,500.

I think it could have been done for alot less. The tunnel can be straightened with alum plates and installing rails is not that hard. I would try to buy the sled for $3,900, fix it for less than $1,000. Its a great sled for less than $5,000 and it should sell for $5,500 on Craig's list.

as explained to me on a rental in I.P. last year, they expect to continue renting out the sled for the rest of the season. If it's broke no rental$ hence you pay. I would definitely make them a lowball offer, late season, lots of sleds around, yeta yeta,Good luck!

happened to a buddy of mine last year in cooke, rolled it down a hill and just bought it as it would be more to fix it through the lodge...its the best sled he says he has ever had

what a bummer, but what are you gonna do? i tell people when they borrow my stuff if you break it you bought it. have lost a couple of friends over this but if you want to use what i've got i expect it back the same way you took it. don't bend my handle bars and then bring it back and say they will be ok, you will be buying me another pair. have rented a couple of sleds and always hated having to sign, but knew if something major ever happened i would probably end up owning the sled...

I would buy it, but negotiate the price...they will be selling them soon anyway I would imagine. How bad is the tunnel bent? Need to replace bad, or looks ugly bad?

Look at it this way, $4500 and you get nothing, or $4200 and you get something, even if you can only get $3500 out of it, that's still less impact to the wallet...

With a bent tunnel, they are probably charging you for a whole new tunnnel. Dealers don't straighten anything, if its bent at all they throw it away and install a new one. Any decent body shop should be able to straighten it for you easily.

i bent the tunnel on my personal sled. I took it to the dealer for an insurance estimate and was about $200 short of it qualifing as totalled. So I took my sled and the $2200 insurance check to a private sled mechanic/ body shop. He straightened the tunnel and re riveted everything back together. I pocketed about $1000 dollars on the deal (hello boss seat). You cannot tell it was ever bend. I know how it was bent and I still can't tell.

If you are willing to do the foot work you can cut your losses if you buy it, or you can pay the extra and not have to haul the sled home and take care of it yourself.

Also, if you don't like the way this outfitter is treating you make sure he knows you will never be coming back. Not, all outfitters are jerks on the repairs. Most of them that I've delt with don't sweat the small stuff and look the otherway unless you do noticable damage (or ride like a wreckless dumb a$$).

2 years ago my buddy took his wife on a trip and thay rented sleds 10 miles up the trail
she stuffed in the trees the dealer wanted 1900 to fix it and he asked how much thay wanted to sell it for got it for 2100 so he bought it 250 to fix and its a grate sled has over 9000 miles on it

We showed up on Sunday morning to settle up on the numbers the tunnel looked fine but the rear shock, suspension parts, ect.. were also bent. The rental group seemed a bit suprized that a guy from AZ had a trailer with and was talking about buying the sled.

When we first showed up the tunnel was bent and would need replacement, as we chatted and started to push for a sell of the sled at $5400 he sundenly seemed to think that it could be straightned as we continued to push for the sale of the sled he was now confident that damages would be at $1394 for the rear suspension work and new rails. The work looked legit so he paid up and off we went.

Thanks for all the snowest help. All of his sleds were rented that day and almost every day for that matter. At $200 a day he would have lost money on the sale to us.

Hey Joe Mama, did he use a credit card to pay for it?? There might be some insurance coverage on it.

Glad things worked out for you!

One thing to remember in this situation if the sled is being repaired is to DEMAND all of the broken/bent parts be returned to you after repair.
This usually re-opens negotiations as rental companies will charge you for a new part with cosmetic damage, pocket the cash and leave it as is.

I had an aquaintence run into this issue with a small crack in the hood... After he demanded the old hood be returned to him, they backpeddled and charged him a small amount for the damage and left the sled as is.
