my dad is looking at getting a diesel for towing the camper and i'll use it for winter trips. hes not set on brand. hes looking around the 05-08 yr. whats good and what to stay away from. the pickup will be used maybe one weekend out of each month. thanks

As I see it he has 3 choices for those years.
05-07 Cummins
05-08 Dmax
08 Powerstroke
Stay away from anything else.

I think the Duramax was pretty solid after 04', the LB7 had some injector issues, after that it was pretty solid. The 6.0 powerstroke had a lot of issues from what Ive heard and I would probably stay away from it. The Cummins I believe has been pretty good all the way through. I would recommend an 06 Dmax. You get the 6 speed Allison and its pre-dpf which is nothing but a power and mileage robbing pos.

My 2 cents

True to that I own a Classic 07 Duramax and I love it and get alot of friends and lookers that would love to buy it , but I'm not sellin any time soon .

if it's going to be used mostly for towing i'd say get a cummins. the 5.9L's were pretty well bulletproof at the end, and if you are willing to do the deletes the 6.7L is a beast as well

im a chevy fan so i'm pushing to get a duramax. hes looking a something with 70-80,000 miles so maybe even new. hes going to talk to a guy at work that was interested in his pickup he had for back up. i think he might go dodge but i'll wait and see. thanks for the info guys

There is a difference in the 06 duramax. You could get either the LLY or the LBZ, but both were mated to the "new" 6 speed vs the 05s 5 speed.

I liked the look, and interior of the 07.5/08 Duramax. Granite, you have to do a DPF delete, and tuner, but it's well worth it IMO. Funnest truck I've ever driven. I drove a few 6.4 Fords, and the interior is nice, they just don't have the get up and go of the Duramax. I loved the Cummins motor, but just wasn't real fond of the truck around it. I've just heard too many people say there truck doesn't last half as long as there motor does in it. Any of the 3 will pull just fine IMO, but I think the Chevy is just the best ride for comfort, and after a few minor mods, this thing will haul the mail.

a friend with an 2006 6.0 powerstroke and tows no problems / no engine problems but everyone acknowldeges there are good and bad 6.0 stories. I have 2011 6.7 powestroke pulls like a train. Only complaints so far after 12,000 miles is air leaks at door window seals resulting in whistling noises when driving and interior rattles more than past super duty trucks I've owned - kind of irritating given the the new trucks cost so much.
All the duramax owners I know are happy with their trucks and given model years you are looking at I would probably look for a duramax over powerstroke and cummins.

I thought just the LBZ had the 6 spd. I have a 2006 LBZ and I love it. No DPF or Urea system. Strong motor (365hp stock) and excellent tranny. I have a programmer and exhaust on my truck and I love driving it every time I'm in it. You will not have a problem towing your camper with that truck. Good luck finding one though. It took me over a year to find one with low miles and all the options I wanted.

Stay away or delete the pre-dpf which LOWERS the fuel milage.

I know what you have said about the years

BUT the best truck for the money is a

1994 -1997 Ford F-250 - 350 CREW CAB 4WD

with a CUMMINS 5.9 engine / transmission

and DODGE DANA drivetrain.

Air bags suspension all the way around.

Body is great and drive train will get you 22-26 MPG on the freeway

i have 3 6.0s and love them but if i was buying a truck to tow i would honestly get a dmax or a 2011 ford 6.7. i towed my race truck up to bc for an event this year and the 6.7 is like a train. so much power its stupid. you could get a cummins but make sure you get one with a manual trans lol.

Does it still have the stock 8 track player too? :face-icon-small-hap

:spit: CUMMINS FTW!

If you are comparing same year to same year, buy the one that you get the best deal on.

Nothing else is going to be equal, they all have good and bad, one thing for sure, any of them will pull great.

Shop around, fuel prices are still pretty high you should be able to find a good buy.
