For all the America Bashers

I remember this broadcast and have finnaly found a copy of it. This was 1973 and vietnam had been our quagmire and the economy was in a shamble that lasted till Reagan brought us out. Thanks to the Canuck. Swampy

"The Americans" The United States dollar took another pounding on German, French and British exchanges this morning, hitting the lowest point ever known in West Germany.

It has declined there by 41% since 1971 and this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least-appreciated people in all the earth.

As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtse. Who rushed in with men and money to help?

The Americans did.

They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Misssissippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When distant cities are hit by earthquakes, it is the United States that hurries into help... Managua Nicaragua is one of the most recent examples. So far this spring, 59 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped. The Marshall Plan .. the Truman Policy .. all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans. I'd like to see one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplanes. Come on... let's hear it!

Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tristar or the Douglas 107? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or women on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times ... and safely home again. You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everyone to look at. Even the draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, most of them ... unless they are breaking Canadian laws..are getting American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend here. When the Americans get out of this bind ... as they will... who could blame them if they said 'the hell with the rest of the world'. Let someone else buy the Israel bonds, Let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design foreign buildings that won't shake apart in earthquakes.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble?

I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbours have faced it alone and I am one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of these. But there are many smug, self-righteous Canadians.

And finally, the American Red Cross was told at its 48th Annual meeting in New Orleans this morning that it was broke. This year's disasters .. with the year less than half-over… has taken it all and nobody...but nobody... has helped.

A real example of the story as it has been circulated:

I for one think its time to close the borders and hang out the no vacancy sighn, those who don't like it can go back to southern CA and New Jersey. It's time to take care of the home fires and let the rest of the world with a few exceptions try to get along with out our help,be it either fincial, military or humanitarian aid. This is just my.02$ worth but for the most part the other countries don't want us from what I've seen when I was still in the service.

The problem with that is that isolationism creates it's own problems. The US tried to stay isolated from WWII and if Germany wasn't so stupid as to attack Russia we may not have won the war. Powerful, genocidal, ruthless dictators have to be taken down before they become a large threat.

Isolationism is not the right way nor is sticking our nose in everyone's business. There's a fine line in between where we need to be. Problem is everyone has their own idea of where that line is.

I am not so sure that isolationism won't be such a bad thing in the future, after these clowns in charge are run out of DC. Would actually be a good thing for a short term, while we internally do some house cleaning. Seal up the borders, deport all illegals that are taking advantage of our kind heart system of welfare, and let the rest of the world take care of themselves for a while without US help or funding. Once were back on our feet then take on the world, with a new attitude and with the UN HQ relocated to another country of their choosing. What ever happend to fix america first?

There is a big difference between non isolation and sending billions to countries that hate our successes and way of live. Debate with anyone who is civil but stop all foreign aid. Swampy :eek:

Very well said....

Props to ya Mr.Swampy. Well said by G Sinclair and totally overlooked IMO. As a Canadian I feel very ashamed by our govt's action on the security front. Many of the same things that irk the Americans should equally irk us. The uber-educated left wing would differ but where would they be without our American friends? Being the big dog on the block takes makes for many more problems than hurling insults and innuendo. We are an amazing continent with many people who hail from many diverse origins, some do not want to accept our methods but most are willing to take the social and economic handouts. My father was an immigrant from Russia in the 20's {Ellis island} thanks America. My ancestors fled tyranny and were ostracized by many european people before coming to North America. This made such an impression on him he enlisted early in WW2 and spent the war straightening out injustices he witnessed as a young child. Swampy you and me may be the most unpopular posters on this site in the eyes of our countrymen. That being said I challenge anyone who actually is honest with themselves to differ. Close the UN and give the space to the unemployed and homeless.

I want to cut off that sort of aid for a year, no, 6 months and see who comes crying for help.

While we're at it, why don't we ask the countries with a debt to us for WWI and WWII to pay even the interest on that debt. We wouldn't need to murder our own country with this stimulus bill if we would get paid what we're owed.

The world is F***** up. Seriously f***** up.

I am talking more along the lines of military use vs. humanitarian aid. Iraqi people do not hate Americans or the American way of life. The radicals/terrorists however do hate our way of life. You have to relate it to the mob or something like that. If you were in the mob would you support a new police station coming to your town, of course you wouldn't. But if you were being oppressed by that mob you would welcome that police station with open arms. The average Iraqi citizen does not hate America, very much the opposite. They are just scared of us because the radicals are trying to convince them that America hates them, America wants to take over, we're evil, etc.
