Foot Injuries

Not a real bad injury but last night I was in a head on collision with another dirtbike and almost missed the other biker. My foot hit his footpeg and folded it back towards my shin. The boot took a huge hit and the metal toe is bent into the sole an amazing way.

I figure I was going at least 40-45km/h. I dunno, 3rd gear and pinned coming around a corner.

I broke a couple of toes(not the first time) but I did stretch and make a mess of some ligaments. No surgery but heavily bandaged and once the swelling goes down a bit(foot is 3 times the size of my other) they wanna cast it for awhile.

Nobody at the hospital(knows what tey are doing) wanted to tell me how long it might take. 3 weeks, 3 days, 3 months.....nobody would tell me. Just that I had to come back in a week to get it casted.

I kinda really would like to know how long I'm gonna be out of comission.

Any help would be great.

Sounds pretty bad, tough break....
two years ago i was in a snowmobiling accident, took a sled off a riverbank and landed on the hard ice, ended up fracturing my heel in four places.... I didnt have to have surgery but i was in a cast for about alittle over two months, and then when i began to walk again, it was slow going.... All that i can say is that you cant push it, your feet have to carry all your body weight, and if they are not healed enough or not healed correctly(like mine) they will cause you more pain and troubles down the line... Hope everything goes good...

Not sure there, but I shattered both my heels flat landing feet first from 30 ft over jumping a 100ft triple and ditching the bike. had moon boots for 2 months and was feeling real good by month 3. doctors said i would never race again or even walk. dont listen to them, just stay focused on getting back at it. good luck to you and sorry about your crash..

Drink lots of fluids.
12 oz. fluids.
Cold amber colored 12 oz. fluids.

Repeat.

Oh I'll be more than ready come sled season I'm sure. It's the rest of bike season I'm miffed about. haha. Another 2 months of biking left and I'm wrapping my foot every 12hrs. Damn.

It coulda been worse though so that's keeping me positive.

take it easy on the tedons/ligaments.

it sounds good but drinking will slow the repair. If you smoke quit right now or you will be giving yourself a slow f u g for recovery.

I imagine that they wouldn't say much more then a week because when it's so swollen it can be hard to diagnose....probably get a few more x-rays and soem scans of some sort when you go back.

Good luck and take it slow and easy.

Ligaments can take month and months. I'm 5 months with a wrist injury (of course no doctors visit.) and I still cant do a regular push up and have't been on my bike since. ligaments bad, bones heal much quicker. Good luck take it slow.!!
Your toes i would say six weeks, your ligaments/tendons possibly 8 weeks

My (right) and left foot

Had ankle surgey for collapsed achilles tendon in October '07. Tendon caused arch of my foot to flatten out completely. My foot was always kind of turned out anyway all my life, and foot needed to be realligned. I was diagnosed in March '07, but I needed to get through my summer at work. By the time of my surgery the bones of my ankle were worn and gapped to the point surgeon had to take bone graft off my hip to fill in spaces. I was 3 months on crutches before I could even begin to walk and another 3 before I could return to work full time..I now have 4 screws in arch of my foot to rebuild arch, and they had to knick my achilles tendon to lengthen it back out.

Because I am on my feet all day at work my ankle starts out almost normal size, but by the time I get home it is about the size of a grapefruit. The doctor told me the swelling could last up to a year. At this point I can't walk across a hardwood floor in my bare feet. I have to wear orthotics ($300 insoles) for my shoes. I actually have to have the same surgery done on the other foot, but the foot so far isn't gapped or misaligned, so I should hopefully only be on crutches about 6 weeks before I can gradually return to work.

Like said before, take it easy and slow. Don't ignore what the doctor says but also be aware not every doctor is is the best at what they do. Get a second opinion if you need to. The doctor I first visited at the orthopedics office I felt wasn't that geat, but the foot specialist in the same office that did the surgery was exceptional.

Don't wait to get the proper treatment. I was only able to ride my sled once around the yard last winter, and I may have to cut my season short this year for my other surgery. Hang in there and take it all in stride (no pun intended!)
