Flywheel/magneto removal?

I'm workin on puttin a new crank in my 9 and I've got the motor out and have come to the point where I need to remove the flywheel/magneto so I can split the case. Any tips on gettin this assembly off? I'm sure if I worked at it hard enough I could get it I just don't want to break anything. This sled has already cost me a fortune and I've only ridden it 3 miles since I've owned it:mad:. So any help in avoiding further damage and cost would be appreciated. Thanks. Sonny

I took mine to the local dealer and they did it for free. Watched him do it though. He hit it real quick with an air impact and flywheel tool done in less than 5 min.

flywheel puller and line the motor up on tdc of the mag cylinder. tighten the puller down and a tap with a hammer and they usually come right off.

lining it up on tdc lines up the magnets and it comes off much easier.

I tried a small 3 way puller(not a 3 jaw) that I use for harmonic balancers on cars and used the bolt holes where the recoil cage bolts up and tapped on the end but it didn't budge so that's where I stopped. Should I get a little more western with it? I'd trust my 5 year old nephew with it before I took it to my local dealer so I'd like to get it done myself if at all possible. What sort of puller was used and where did it bolt up?

thats the right puller sometimes you have to tap the puller bolt with a hammer and it should pop right off

If you are going to do it yourself with the puller, be EXTREMELY careful when putting the bolts into the flywheel, you do not want them to go all the way through and hit the stator itself, if you do, you will ruin it.

Just something I remember reading last summer..... on this procedure:beer;

i used the same set up, i had to crank on the puller pretty good and on my brothers i had to hit it with a 2lb hammer pretty good. the key is lining up the crank on tdc for the mag cylinder. if not you are fighting the magnets.

i couldnt get my brothers off till i lined them up.

Success! Thanks alot guys, you really are a huge help. After I saw a picture of the SLP puller I remembered I had one similar to that layin around somewhere so I dug around and found it and by hell it popped right off! Thanks again. I owe all you guys a brewski. Sonny
