Flatlanders with Pro RMK help me out!

My buddy just got a new '12 RMK and it has a switch that i can turn from running my sled on '91 octane to Ethonal. Does anyone else have this, or have experience on this? I have a few basic questions like:

1. What happens if I dont switch it?
2.how important is it to switch it over?
3.have you ever run ethonal in your sled?
4.if so can you notice the difference?

Any Info on the subject at all is appreaticated THANKS

Not really a pro rmk issue. Lots of Cats had a similar thing.

My understanding is this.
Ethanol burns hotter and less consistent than non-oxygenated gasoline. The ethanol setting (or plug) riches up the fuel in the ECU to compensate. I avoid ethanol on my sled. If you have to run it, definitely use the setting. I hope that helps.

Are you referring to the octane plug that is yellow? If so it is for 91 non ethanol on one side and gas that has some ethanol on the other side. It is not for straight ethanol. It retards the timing a little when on the "ethanol" side. Its best to run it on the "ethanol" side because most gas has some ethanol in it or has a lower octane than 91 since it has been sitting in the gas stations tanks for awhile.

I switched mine to run 91 octane and never looked back. I personally think they run better that way but if a gas station doesn't have 91 I just switch the plug. Hope that's helps

Yeah I figured just leave the switch at 91 and roll with it, just curious as to what the yellow switch is all about. Thanks for the help guys

Side note: Be careful at pumps with one hose. Blender pumps and 10%+ethanol in hose can mess your engine big time. Know of a dealer who worked on a engine twice before found out too much ethanol in tank from this situation! Rider always topped it off with premium. No warranty second rebuild. Definitely safer using ethanol plug if filling at one of these. 800's safest on 91!!!

The ethanol/Prem jumper or switch changes the timing and overall fuel quantity. The ethanol setting adds aprox 2% more fuel and changes the timing to best work with 89oct 10% ethanol. The Prem setting optimizes the fuel delivery and timing for 91 Oct no ethanol.

I guess I can't speak to the 12's.

On the 11's, and I have one, the ethanol resister added 5% more fuel, no timing change, it's that simple. Verifiable on other threads here from the past, and via service notifications. The non-ethanol resister reduces fuel shot through the injectors by 5%.

The resister's use have nothing to do with octane. Zero. You can get 91+ octane 10% ethanol, which burns hotter and less efficient than 91+ octane non-ethanol, which is why the ethanol resister offers more fuel flow. In fact, ethanol as an oxygenate increases octane in ethanol fuels. Ethanol and octane are different attributes. The use of lower octane fuels, regardless of ethanol content, can cause your timing to roll back via the ECU and deto sensor. Rollback occurs in steps.

Back to the 12's - since I don't own one, I can't verify. I personally doubt they'd make a change to the function of the resister after one year.

For a second there i thought you bought a polaris wag.

How would anyone have found you with out the Tobe sled.

haha NO WAY! and I almost bought an XM a couple weeks ago, but I figure the economy will be shot by this spring so I'm not tying my money up in any larger scale purchases anytime soon. :face-icon-small-sho

not entirely correct but close

Ummm, I would double check your info, the yellow plug has a setting for non-ethanol and ethanol, not for one octane or another. Polaris recommends using 91 octane fuel, but at a minimum 87 octane fuel should be used. And fuel resistor set to proper setting for ethanol or no ethanol, on the 11 it is a matter of turning your resistor around and plugging back in, on the 12' it is a two sided plug, and on the 13' it is a setting on your dash that can be selected at startup by setting the parking break and pressing the select button until fuel choice comes up and then selecting the correct setting for the fuel you are using.
