flat lander heading west need help

I need some help for you guys. I have been riding in Iowa for years but I have never been out west to ride. Me and 2 buddies will be driving to Denver Friday Jan 18th for a long weekend. We want to ride all day sat and sun but we dont know where to go and we will be renting sleds. I have looked for online but I dont want a guided tour with a somones family and kids on some touring sled with a few hour time limit. Any help or suggestions to make out first trip out there better would be greatly appreciated. I cant wait to get out there!

Will you have a truck?

Extreme rents sleds with a trailer out of Denver.

There was a place in Frisco that used to drop sleds off at vail pass. There were fighting with the forest service about being able to do it. Not sure of they still do.

I would recommend On The Trail, or any rental in Grand Lake, co. about 2 hours north/westof Denver, lots of groomers and powder stashes. Perfect place to get used to mountain riding! I've rented there at least 4 times for friends and family. I know alot of people who have had issues with on the trail were due to damage, but if you don't break something it wont cost anything, and if you do break it, well you gotta pay to get it fixed.

Got sleds lined up!! we will be picking them up that sat morning so now we need a place to go. We will have the sleds for 48 hours now just need some direction to go and a place to spend the night!!!

Steamboat springs, can ride many places from there. Rabbit ears good place for beginner mountain riders, not much steep but usually is deep. Best rule to ad-hear to is always go up off trail unless you know for sure you can get up back on trail. You can also head up to steamboat lake that I hear has good snow. I think that is north of Steamboat Springs.

We would love to take you out in our permitted area in southern Colorado. We will help you make the most out of your mountain riding experience and you have the assurance of riding with me in my home area. If you are interested, please message me or visit www.mountainskillz.com and we can also help you with great lodging at very fair prices.

Thanks, Matt

Go to the Colorado Snowmobile Assoc. (CSA) site www.snowmobilecolo.com Go to Trails, click away. The closest town (from Denver) and Rabbit Ears is Kremmling.
If you intend to punch cornices please rent beacons/shovels/probes and learn how to use them. Also, it takes a few days to acclimate yourself to 8-11,000' altitude so lay off the booze and drink lots of water. Night time and early AM temps are Zero to -15F--older diesel trucks be prepared.

I would also recommend 'On the Trail' and the Grand Lake area for riding/lodging. It will have everything you need for your 'first time out west' trip. Once you're in town, you won't have to go anyplace else, everything is within walking distance. As opposed to Steamboat/Rabbit Ears where you'll have to drive nearly everywhere you go. Plus, it's much easier to get lost at R/E for someone who's never been there. Grand Lake has a good map, well groomed trails, and plenty of off-trail riding if you look for it.

Try The Rapids Lodge for lodging. 970 627 3707

Crack a windshield and be ready to buy a new windshield, hood, trailing arms, gas tank, crankshaft... those guys are scammers to be avoided at all costs. Go down south and ride with Matt. You will have a FAR better time!

You'd be almost crazy not to take Matt up on this offer! Wolf Creek has a bunch of snow and if you're looking to ride with the best...Matt's your man. On top of being a pro-snowmobiler he is a legal guide, so you know you're in good hands!

From Denver you still need to travel at least two more hours for good riding. Going south is only a few more hours longer and you will be at Wolf Creek and Mr. Entz's backyard:face-icon-small-hapMatt's a great dood, a "fair":face-icon-small-tonrider, and knows WC like Obama knows weed:face-icon-small-shoDo yourselves a favor and pony up for a day on the hill with the Boondocker guru. My father in law farms up near Sibley..........what part of IA our your boyz from?

Whatever you decide to do make sure you have avy equipment and know how to use it. Conditions are pretty serious with all the snow and low temps we've had lately.

We have complete sets of backpack, beacon, shovel, and probes for anyone that chooses to ride with Mountain Skillz........ and we make a point of making sure you know how to use them! The gear is free to borrow and something everyone is REQUIRED to carry while you are out with us whether it's our loaner stuff or your own.

sorry guys I have been away for a few days but thank you for the advice. I will talk with my buddy and see what he thinks but im thinking we should give matt a call. what will it cost us to ride, rent, borrow, sleep ect? We are from Harlan Ia its about 40 min east of omaha.

That's a good call akramer. If you've never ridden out West before, take the advice of those who wrote before me. You'll only be out for a couple of days so why not make the most of it and guarantee yourself a good time? If it were my first time out West, I definitely wouldn't want to go exploring on my own with just a couple of friends who also aren't familiar with the area, sleds and the terrain. There is too much to go wrong. Do yourself a favor and get a guide like Matt.

1000 to 1500 a piece. To pull a trailer would spend 500 in fuel.

Another vote for Matt. I haven't ridden with him at Mountain skillz yet but I hope to during the CSA convention. He will put you on a great mountain sled and take you to the ideal spots. He'll even help dig you out when you get stuck! Perfect!

akramer-pm sent!

Thank you everyone for the kind words! We are happy to have anyone out to ride with us, but our primary focus is on helping people become better, safer, and more aware riders. Mountain snowmobiling can be one of the greatest experiences someone can have and that is what we intend to help our customers achieve. Please anyone with any questions, feel free to email (matt@mountainskillz.com) or call (719-849-3168) any time.

BugIto, have you signed up for the rides with me for the convention? I'm really excited to take people out for a "fun" ride! I believe there are a couple of spots available if anyone else is interested.
