I'll make this guess right now. The collar is a stop gap fix for this winter. When the 14s hit the prod line they'll make enough updated shafts for all the 13s as well and do a recall/update in the fall when the sh!t storm settles.
I totally agree, for a few reasons:
They still want to sell plenty of 13's, and the 14 demos will be out in a couple months and they need to squash this whole issue and make it go away. It's barely even snowed here in Colorado and there are plenty of 13s sitting on the showroom floor. Try explaining to an unfamiliar new customer why there's a clamp on the driveshaft but it should be ok.
Eventually one of their clamped driveshafts might fail, whether it comes loose, is improperly torqued or whatever. Just imagine what a sh!tshow the forums will be then. And again, that'll hurt selling off more 13s.
Now there's the 14s, by the time snowcheck season comes along, they need to have a reassuring change to this shaft. Whether this current design is good or not (I think we've all seen enough of this speculation), doesn't even matter anymore because people have lost faith in it. They just need it to be new and prove to the '14 buyers that it is bombproof. Give a new shaft to the 13 owners, have them gush about how good it is, set the 14 buyers at ease, and put this thing to bed.
For me personally, my 13 Pro (0 miles still) is the first Polaris anything I've ever owned. It's sucked reading all of this over the last month, but I'm IMPRESSED with how fast they've responded. Holy sh!t there are a lot of people on snowest that like to b!tch no matter what. My dealer called and said they would have the collars this week. I don't believe this is a band-aid that I'll be stuck with forever, but at least I'll take her out with some confidence for now. Fawk... I just want to make a powder turn !
And lastly... hey Polaris, give the guys that broke down in the field a little more than a gallon of oil. That was a raw deal. A nice Klim gift certificate sounds about right... Enough for a helmet or jacket and to buy his buddy who towed him something too
