First time rebuilding sled motor, What should I look for???

Well I figured I better start a new thread for the many questions that I am going to have throughout this process. My dad loves his new 700 even though its locked up so right away we pulled the head and both pistons are seized tight. Both have even started to melt a little. So I have a few questions. Will I be able to pull the cylinders off? What should I look closely at when I get the motor out and split the cases?

New cylinders, new pistons and a new crank. That sucker got so hot it melted the orings. Is that the top ring showing in the photo?

Yeah the top ring is showing, I knew it was going to need the pistons and cylinders. Any problems if I would use reman parts? Anything I should look for in the cases?

send the whole she-bang to indy dan

you wont be disappionted

TM1 bottom end, re-nic'd jugs and a set of 06 pistons/rings....your back in business
dont forget to replace the stock moounts with new 06 mounts

better send him the clutch too

I'll have to wait until I get the motor out but I'm pretty sure I might be better off looking for a used motor and freshening it up. I hate to see what the injectors look like after seeing the water temp and the D.E.T. sensors.

Really a personal preference. Some of the points you identified (DET, injectors) may push you towards a used engine but the problem is you don't really know what you are getting, it will likely be about 1/2 the cost or more and it could fall over tomorrow.

If you go used, buy carefully as the injectors/DET may not come with it. Additionally, you need to make sure the injector colors match your ECU or get the ECU reflashed to match the new injectors.

If you are handy, the job is pretty easy but your best bet (for peace of mind) is likely to get indy to do it for you....engine and primary clutch.

The used motor I was looking at comes with everything, sensors injectors, recoil, throttle body, you name it. It says it was rebuilt this year but my plan was to tear it down and inspect it before installing it. If I am thinking correctly the 700's can be converted into 900's right? Same bottom end just different cylinders. So my plan is to get a used engine in the sled for now and as I have the spare time and extra cash tear this motor apart, send the bottom to indydan for a TM1 and convert it to a 900 as a spare in case something would happen to the used motor later on down the road. Anybody see any problems with this plan. Oh and what does the dealer need to reflash the ECU? Just the ECU? Thanks for your help.

Is this a 900 or 700 engine we are talking about. If it is a 900 and you want to rebuild it I have some jugs that I can get to you...and other parts. I may have a DET. I used to own 4 900's (sold one now have 3) and have lost of extra parts. I even have a full engine sitting around. I bought it last year and it has been sitting. I was planning to use it for parts but haven't needed any. PM me if you want to go the rebuild route.

Either way good luck.

well I bought a used 900 motor to drop in this thing and I haven't had a chance to check the compression yet but I think I may put a new top end in it to be on the safe side. The PTO side piston and cylinder are starting to show some slight scoring. what do you guys do with your cylinders when you put new pistons in? Do you send them out somewhere?

All I can tell you is, for a top end, you need to inspect & measure the cylinder bores (per the shop manual), write them down & do the same for the new pistons....Are they in tolerance? That information will lead you to what's next.

I will have to get it apart and take some pictures and let you guys help me out. Like I said, I'm pretty new to this end of it yet.

Does anybody know if the 700 and 900 pipes are the same? They are listed with different part numbers but I have talked to people that have done the same thing I am doing and they are running the 700 pipe? Is this ok?

No they are not. The expansion chambers are different sizes. It would run but never make max power and could possible have flat spots in the power curve.

Alright thanks for your help. Off to ebay again to find a pipe.
