Well, finally go to go out last Monday to Gorman Lake, Golden. All was good when we were about to wrap it up for the day and decided to take my friends TM1000 for a ride(should have stayed on my TM 1000) I was tooling around when I decided to take a short chute that I had already taken on my sled. Slope was about 80*, with about 20' opening between rocks on the ledft, and a cliff on the right.
Didn't think much about it, but went into the pull to slow, gunned in when it got real steep, and the sled reared up on me. I hate to admit it, but I paniced, went into a left handed sidehill, right towards the top of the cliff, about 3/4 up the climb. I should have been able to pull it up and get to the top, but I grabbed a handful of throttle.(Very bad move on a Tm1000). I shot towards the top of the cliff, still hanging on, believing I could pull myself out of this mess. There were several small trees lining the top of the cliff, and I hit them dead on.
This shot the sled straight up in the air about 10-15', with me doing a handless superman about 5' above the sled. The sled came down, and I came down on the running board with my left thigh, When I hit the sled, my helet popped off(wasn't strapped..my bad )we roller entwind once, Then over the cliff we went, bout 50' down. Woundn't be so bad but there was a large, flat ledge on the bottom of the cliff instead of a slope. I could hear the sled behind me, and I felt like I was rolling down the hill, scrambling to get out of the way. When I hit, I land flat on my frontside, it knoicked everything out of me. I literally could not move for about 10 minutes, and I felt like a ton was on me.
I ended up in the ER the next day in Calgary, as the mechanism of injury was conducive to death, no kidding. Checked me out good for multiple fractures, and the possibility of organ rupture was very high. Ended up with a large hematoma in my left and right thigh, grade 2 MCL tear in my left knee, and chest and left scapula contusion. CT to day to rule out aortic tear
I am very lucky to have not sustained much more serious injuries, or even died. My friends, who saw the whole thing, said they thought I was dead.
Learned a few things, ALWAYS do up your helmet, that was actually the first time in years I didn't, and I was even lecturing my friend that day about the importance of getting them done up.
Respect the mountains, I was just getting too cocky and didn't give it a second thought if something happened. ALWAYS plan your climb, and decide before you go up what you're going to do if you get into trouble( something I usually always do, but again, not this time).
Don;t do crazy stuff on a sled you are not familiar with. I didn't know how the sled responded to different conditions and I had no business taking it up where I did.
Anyways, I'm out for a few weeks anyways. Everyone be safe, stay alive, and have fun.
Pics of body damage, but hurting too much to get pics on climb. BTW, sled landed about 5' away from me, on it's side, idleing like nothing happen.
