First Gas Gas 300 XC Snowbike

Nice bike.

Been a long time since I had a 4 stroke bike but I seem to recall the 2 cables was something to do w the acceleration pump.

Fyi my coolant line wrapped around the carb works great on my kx. No ice.

Next year i'll be running a TM40 off an XP though with the coolant passage built in. It will look a little less redneck.

Dissapointing APT is leaving people holding the bag so to speak with the ice issue. I think more than a few were sold on the premise that ice didn't effect them. Can't see it being a big change to add a coolant passage in them. Esp with the billet ones. Model it up, put a chunk of billet in the cnc and press play. Cast ones wouldn’t be tough either, unless they have some sort of a long term deal with whoever is casting them

So far my housings have been working, but the temps here haven't been bad. If anyone is interested to help me "test", let me know. I'm not trying to sell anything. I'm not interested in selling parts that aren't fully validated and tested. Just trying to spread word of mouth as I slowly work my way to being able to offer parts to the public. The parts are cheap for me to print. Purchase your own heater(McMaster 7945T43, $23 is what I used), and I can send you a housing/sleeve. Hopefully low on the redneck mod scale, low cost, and hopefully effective. If I can use my capabilities to help keep people safe for cheap, seems like a win win for me.

Latest FB post:
Initial testing seems pretty promising. The ambient temps have been warm, but my skill level allows for repeated dunks into the snow. On the heater side of the carb, the snow quickly melts away. The exterior of the housing generally stays between 60-70F while riding. Garage testing the heating element stays around 60F at idle, but quickly jumps up to 100+ at wide open throttle.

I'll be out of the office for the next week. When I get back I should be able to pump out parts if anyone wants some. Cheers.

The TM40 style coolant heater is what is being explored now. I have discussed this at length with Corey. Yes, the Casting supplier and issues there make the cast model difficult to change any time soon. The Billet model would be easier. We are working with a custom Aluminum Tube vendor with some ideas. We will have a nice set up this year for sure.

From the first Smart Carb tested, they have "all" had carb heaters. We discovered this season the Cast model lacks the material for a full length heater element. Modifying or using a shorter element has not proven to solve the icing in the cast models. The first Billet model tested ran ice free for an entire season. The Gasser and the 300SX testing and video's ran ice free. WOT periods followed by simply letting it sit and idle. Smooth and clean. No ice. Carb ice is a random issue. In certain conditions, as you know, it will happen.

Should have a great snow bike application this year. It will be based on the Billet model. No electricity required.

It is not ideal. Similar to the xcw. That 3rd gear jump is a pain. Tapped in 2nd, grab 3rd, 3rd struggles, back to 2nd tapped, repeat.... A close ratio trans makes a big difference.

yessir I am familiar with the wide ratio problem, and it is especially a pain on a 2stroke for snow, Thank you, that is the nail in the cofffin for sure on the gas gas. I looked on the net for a list of the ratios in the gearbox but could not find any listed so getting the answer from someone who has actually tried it is very valuable thank you!

poop

sorry to hear you cant have that sweet looking gas gas cuz the tranny is crap!!
Guess you gotta save you money and just ride that wr that is in your garage this summer!!!

Dirt rebel the gas gas got me hooked on two strokes, and was going to get a recluce and softer seat for it. Anyway when looking for aftermarket parts, and discussing the gasser and ktm with mt doo, I decided to weigh it and the gasser had 10 more pounds on the ski and 7 more on the track compared to my sons sx 450F. How could that be and feel lighter than the 450, I have no idea, but instead of putting money into the gasser I found a xc300 left over and since mt doo has done all the testing, I will be riding it next year. The gasser is a good looking bike and worked well once I got it geared, but weight is weight and being I can't seem to loose any, I will let my bike do it. Hope this helps....Garry
