First Gas Gas 300 XC Snowbike

Is it not true that the Gas Gas 300 is the heaviest, and least powerful of the 300 offerings? Sounds good. Crazy how all of the SC equipped bikes have the same distinct sound at low er rp m.

Not sure about the specifics of the Gas Gas? The owner, "gman" has done a lot of research on them. He wanted something "new" and different to play with. Yes, the SC equipped bikes have that sound down low and sing so clean on top. That thing runs amazing. The SC makes it really run.

Maybe a little heavier but you sure don't feel it. As far as power it may be but if i was after the most hp I would of kept my sx 450 and turboed it. I like it because of the FUN factor!!!! And I hate to say it because its not orange ( did I say that )....heck...I drink keystone light, does that explain it. Anyway a BIG thank you to Randy, I know you grumbled about some of the things on this Spanish wonder:face-icon-small-sho

Ya Garry, you're exactly right. We all get so competitive... ha! :) but in the end, it's not about who got 10' higher on a climb, or who made it through the pass "first". After a ton of time on these bikes, I personally have learned it's all about the "fun". You will definitely have a lot of fun on that bike! :) Keep us posted! Thanks much.

Rode today in waist deep powder. What a kick, this thing sings. Problem was carb ice, throttle would stick wide open at times, going to try a hot grip on the carb body. Right now I just have a ktm screw in heater that isn't enough. This bike runs great and starts with just a touch of the happy button. Are other two strockers having carb ice problems. What's your fixes .

I have a 50w air dry heater hosed clamped to the carb with the carb coved with a heat bubble wrap ,works good .
as for the gasgas 300 great bikes maybe even better than the ktm ,I looked for one before I bot my ktm300 but couldn't find one close..
maybe mtn doo can rebuild my bike so I can get my apt sometime soon:face-icon-small-win

Carb ice is an issue. In the video and testing... zero ice. On another day, moist cool conditions, it is a big problem. I spoke with Corey at APT about this tonight. They want an after-market solution for heat. They are focusing on the "Carb" and I understand that. The KTM electric heater is not sufficient to be the end solution. Sled's have used an aluminum tube welded across the intake bell of the carb forever, and completely eliminates the issue. I will be working on this until solved. I will start a new thread, "Carb Heat" as I make progress.

A Smart Carb equipped 2-stroke is the ultimate in "fun" as a snowbike. I will not let Icing be the "issue". We will solve it....

Excellent because I have a SC on the way and was only planning to use the ktm carb heater.

I know between all using this carb the carb ice problem will get solved just figured I would put it out there and see what others had done. I am going to install the modified hand grip heater randy made. On another note, why do four strokes have a dual cable throttle pull and two strokes only a single??? Always wondered this.

My 300 iced bad Saturday but I found after that my heater had unplugged and I realized that I had not put my fuel antifreeze in . I'm goin back to 4 stroke till my sc gets in , cr 500 we ride with has coolant hose run back around the bowl with that section as a copper , his bike has been doing well since that mod .

I believe it is for the accuracy in the TPS system.

water tube

When I ran the kx500 I had a aluminum tube welded to the bowl just below the intake and hooked the water thru it as a warmer. it seemed to work well and is a simple thing to do. also the carb blanket to keep snow off of the carb. I had a post on this 4 years ago.

hows it working

Thinking about getting one of these for summer as the price is right and I am in love with it. I have a yz450f as my primary snowbike but I would like to use this as a backup bike in winter if I get it. I used to run a yz250 smoker on snow and loved it, wish I hadnt sold it! so 2 strokes and carb icing arent a problem for me. How is the gas gas working? is it close to a ktm 300? Is tranny ratio close enough or too wide? Mechanically is there any reason to go orange over gas gas? I have read the online reviews and I know its not the top dog there, but the 3 guys I know who own them say they are the best bike they have ever owned for dirt, ktm 300 included. Is there any major reason to steer clear of gas gas? My dealer says parts are no issue thru him, obviously aftermarket not as available. The question is are there any major mechanical shortcomings that make this bike a bad idea?

The guys at Yellowstone will take good care of you. They are top shelf.

The Gasser is unique. It works, but.... The bendix starter is not good, the slave cylinder is dangerously close to the counter, it is over 30lbs heavier, stator will not charge the battery, need to charge after every ride, the engine is beautiful for single track, soft and smooth. Not that great for snow. The 30 lbs is felt. Big.

Summer trails would be very nice on the Gasser, not the performance Snow Bike though. Which is more important?, summer or winter?

well summer and winter are equally important! I guess summer a little more on this since I have a yz450f already for winter, but I would like it to pull double duty! After reading the ktm 300 build and getting the feeling that is your favorite bike ever, "fast and fun," I suppose the list of bad on the gas gas (bad is the wrong word, not ideal, is a better description), starter, stator, weight, are enough reasons to steer clear. What do you think about the Beta 2 stroke bikes? Here in bozeman the ktm dealer is not my favorite so I was looking at the gasser and then the Beta 300 as my next choice and that is available thru my favorite dealer! The yamaha shop! and then if there is no substitute give in and go orange :( or just get a rekluse for the yz450f and save myself 6 or 7 grand, but maybe drown it in a creek! I want another 2 stroke umm the smell of klotz on a smoky summer morning!

Get the ktm. You only need to buy the bike and then never deal with the dealer again. You know how to fix everything yourself and can get any parts online. You gonna get a new Timbersled or build another?

gosh I really want to buy a timbersled, but every time I almost do it I think 6 grand and it doesnt even have an engine? (I would go longtrack) Just can't quite bring myself to do it! when I have made it 3 years on home built kits that work almost as good. Essentially I said I can buy a longtrack kit or get a brand new gas gas for a grand more and keep building my own. I'm just torn! If I was smart I would just buy a timbersled and quit this silly obsession with building my own. My crystal ball says I will end up with a used '14 timbersled if they come down in price, but even 4 grand is alot of money. It is totally worth it, I just look at all the other things I could buy for the same money and my mind goes crazy! Sorry to hijack the thread anybody else wanna convince me why I should buy the gas gas cuz I sure do want it!
