field repairs on an M7

we were way back in the Uintas (Norther Utah) when I broke my throttle cable. The break was about 4-5 inches from the throttle body rack.

after some head scratching and some luck this is how we fixed it.

I cut the cable and sheilding back about 10" from where it broke (taking care to pull the inner cable back that far). The leatherman clipped the cable and the sheathing perfectly, as good as the tools in my garage!

we tied a knot in it to attach to the parachute cord we had. the coord had to enter the throttle body from the front so we ran the cord up to the hinge of the hood then back. where the cord was knotted to the throttle "pully".

then we pulled the cord tight and tied a knot with the throttle cable.

It was tough to get the throttle position sensors to "talk" from the thumb and the throttle bodies but having someone hold the linkage down and the thumb flipper closed it would start, due to the friction ofthe cord around stuff the throttle return spring took a second or two to close once opened but she ran.

due to the stretching of the cord we could only get about 1/3 throttle using the thumb flipper so to add to the coolness of the fix we ran another string to the left hand for additional "go"!

it worked pretty good and if you kept on the throttle at least partially it would run with only occasional backfires and bogging.

we made it out under its own power so "good day!!!!"

hope this may help someone else in need as there was no way that sled was getting pulled out from where we were!

here is the cord tied to the throttle body and running in the stock cam slot!

Here is the routing so that the cord would pull and not touch the pipe and melt.

here is the last adjustment knot, notice the long end routing (out forthe left throttle assist).

thanks Mike for the help and enginuity, and thanks Paul for the beer, leatherman, help and comedy!

that's twice I have come out of that place "on stings- literally"

as a side note: I purchased an 07 M8 throttle cable that was 1/2" longer and had a ball on the end not the barel for the thnmb flipper for $35 cheaper. works perfectly.

My m7 broke the throttle cable right where it come out of the sheath towards the throttle bodies. We cut the sheath back and then wove the strands of the cable together and melted some yellow nylon rope into the weave, then electrical taped it together. Worked for about 4 rides, full throttle. Broke another cable right at the thumb flipper and used the spin-on tip from a spark plug, clamped it on in place of the barrel lug. I now carry a spare throttle cable for the m7. Seems to eat them up. Well, 2 in 5000 kms anyway.

That is awsome !!!
I broke one one time and was able to just tie a knot in the end of the cable after running it back through the slide. Luckily I had a extra long cable.
