I've gotten wind of this snotel business and have spent a little time googling and playing around with a few of the different sites. Was wondering if you guys had any favorites or if there are any sites out that actually aimed at information for skiing-sledding. My ideal site would send me an email anytime there was a +14 or so dump in a given area. Any input, greatly appreciated as always.:beer;

thats what snotels are, its a way for the NRCS to monitor snowpack, amount of water, things like that, and sledders just use them for snow depths.

as far as which ones are good, find the ones closest to the areas you ride in and just check em often, other then that, dont be so lazy, i just check em when the weather says snow!

It also helps to keep an eye out for the sites when you ride and some of them don't give very accurate representations of the actual snowpack. I've seen them say 6" of new snow and then went riding and there was 18" and vice versa at other sites where the snow was drifted around the site and there was barely a skiff elsewhere. It seems you have to watch them regularly and compare them to the amount of new snow you're actually riding to get a better feel for what the actual amounts are. It kind of takes some time to get used to but they are definitely a good tool once you learn how they work.

Wonder why it does not show our bear station up on keeler?

It may be a manual site. I inhereted the Sno-tel stuff from a guy here when he retired (the FS reads the manual sites via a co-op with the NRCS). We have one automated (Daisy Peak) and four manual sites. Or it may not be calibrated, there was one at Elk Peak in the Castles that was just automated this year and isn't showing up now I am guessing due to technical problems.
