Failed fuel gauge

I took out a new 09 XP this weekend, and sometime in the first 20 minutes the fuel light came on and the little digital bars on the dial showed empty. I knew the sled was full, and rode all day (about 80 miles) with out any other problems. Heard this was a fuse, and checked the fuse.....it was good. Anybody?

i also had that problem. i knew there was a full tank but the guage said completly empty. . called dealer and they said sometime the fuel float gets stuck and might be able to stick a hanger down there and knock it loose. . but when i was riding i launched off a bank onto concrete, trying to knock it loose. . and didn't so if that didn't do the trick i don't know what will. . .they also said i could bring it in and get it fixed but i just don't have the time to go all the way up there just for something that will take a minute. . but i will if it doesn't act right soon. if anyone figures it out. let me know. peace

Recall for Fuel Guage & Oil Guage

There is a recall where the voltage can be incresased in the ECM to supply more juice to the Sender unit in the Gas and Oil Tank. This is supposed to be the fix that works.

When you take it in for your new driveshaft, they do a bunch of electrical updates as well, (wiring, ecm updates, etc) as part of the update they reflash the ecm to fix guage problems (increase voltage, etc) which sets your hourmeter and odometer back to ZERO, so your old sled becomes new again.

Even though the fuse looks good, try replacing it. The only recall is for the 2008 models, not the 09. Remove the airbox and check the connection from the bottom of the fuel sender (little black connection) for proper fitment.
Hope this helps...

Which fuse are you checking? The fuses mounted by the oil tank have nothing to do with it. The fuse for the fuel gauge is located between the airbox and the fuel tank. Mine was blown from the factory causing the guage to read empty.

Good info guys! It is amazing how many times I have to tell the dealer how to fix my machine from threads that I read. Just internet hype I guess...kind of like my driveshaft last year.

as soon as i tell my dealer i read it on the internet he stops believing me until i prove him different he says that on the internet he is superman and no one can hurt him so dont believe everything that you read but i sure have fixed a lot of things from posts on the internet. this is awsome.

Snowcatter....you're the man! I'm assumed the fuse was one of the two located by the oil tank. When I finally checked the correct fuse, it failed a continuity test, even though it looked good visually. Replaced fuse and now have a working fuel gauge. Thanks everyone for your help.
