Fact or Fiction

Synthetic oil for break in on new pistons will not seat the rings?

True, that is why they come with Polaris Blue in them and they recommend it for the first few tank fills. Additionally, most engine builders, that care about their reputation and your satisfaction, will steer you away from synthetics period but especially for breakin, as you want some friction / surface contact to lap the high points off of the sealing surfaces. The other major draw back to synthetics is a lack of corrosion protection as it does not stick to the surfaces like the real Dino oils do.

My preference is Legend as it is super refined Dino oil and as such it has the best properties of both types with none of the down sides. It is a pain to get and the owner is an azz to deal with, but the product justifies the hassles to aquire it.

Well said.

X2 on Legend Oil. However on break-in, I would stick with a non-syn like Polaris Blue.

Neither, just an opinion. Some engines come with synthetic from the factory and they don't burn oil. This is like asking the best way to break in a new engine. Some rings dont seat with dino. So there is more to it then syn or dino.

Fiction!

Rings WILL seat with synthetic BUT it takes a LOT longer (up to 4 times as long) as there is less friction. The crosshatches will eventually seat the rings no matter what oil you use but it's definitely best to use non-syn and get them seated sooner. Also new sleds are coming with Blue non-syn oil in them and in the tanks. Polaris does NOT put the blue dye in from the factory (added cost) so many owners are getting confused. I got confirmation from Polaris on both accounts, my info comes from the manufacturer and several speed shops confirmed the ring seating issue with synthetics too.

Have FUN!

With the ultra hard nikasil plating on modern 2 strokes... the "seating" process is less of a big deal than it used to be. There is a lot of carry over philosophy from those times before nikasil.

I do believe in using HIGH QUALITY non synth oil... for break in and running... I like the Legend 2SR oil.
