WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. (AP) -- An explosion and fire destroyed 16 rooms at the Three Bear Lodge in West Yellowstone.

Officials say the explosion was reported at the log building at about 7 p.m. Friday.

More than 60 guests were evacuated to the Holiday Inn.

The phone number for the lodge rang unanswered Saturday evening.

The group I was with had just left the Three Bears for dinner when it happened. Turns out it was a propane leak in the laundry room that was ignored as they had complaints about it. It burned for a long time.

not to discredit what your saying, but we all know how rumors change as gossip travels. That just sounds quite hard to believe, I mean WHO THE HECK ignores leaking propane?!?!

Unfortunately, a lodge in CO did the same.....over a week of complaints, until she burned to the ground after the explosion!! :(

West Yellowstone Fire

Me and some friends were having dinner across the street at the Holiday Inn on Friday night when the fire broke out. We heard the next morning from a waitress at breakfast that they didn't get the fire out untill 5:30 a.m. Saturday. From the sounds of things the owners of the motel were famous for putting "Band Aides" on things that were in need of repair. Sorry to see things like this happen. Lucky no one was hurt.

They had footage of it on the news last night.

I am glad I am staying that the Golden West Motel when I get into West Yellowstone in March.

West Yellowstone fire caused by propane leak
By The Associated Press

BOZEMAN - Fire investigators say a propane leak caused a fire last week that damaged six rooms at Three Bear Lodge in West Yellowstone.

Jack Dittmann, with the West Yellowstone Fire Department, says the fire marshal traced the cause of the fire to a propane leak in the laundry room. But the source of ignition is still under investigation.

The fire broke out about 7 p.m. Friday. Witnesses reported hearing one or two explosions before the fire started, reports now thought to have been related to the propane leak.

The laundry room is on the north end of a U-shaped portion of the hotel. The fire burned six rooms near the laundry room. About 10 other rooms suffered smoke and water damage.
