Exhaust Valve maintenance

does any one know of a good link or possibly prior thread concerning exhaust valve cleaning on the dragon (07 700). I've heard this is a fairly simple task...just want to make sure i'm doing things correctly.

Really nothing to it. Pull them out and go to town. I just did mine on my 600 the other day. I have used a razor, wire brush, and a small flat blade scraper to scrape off all the carbon on the valve. I also scraped some carbon off of the block, but you need to be very careful to not gouge the alum. block or let the gunk fall into the motor. I used safety wire to clean out the small passage ways that lead to the bellows side. Make sure that the bellows aren't torn, throw on some new gaskets, re-locktite the bolts and you are GTG.

There's a thread about it under INCREASING YOUR IQ at the top.

Please keep in mind that the aluminum valves have a hard coating that you don't want to remove, so careful when you scrape, and I would avoid the wire wheel.

Don't forget to take a shop rag with a little Brake-Clean/ Lacquer Thinner wrapped around a 1" or so wide scraper and wipe/clean the goo out of the exhaust valve bores.

Check for rips/tears in the bellows as SkiBreeze mentioned.

I personally do NOT use Loc-Tite on the bolts, I.M.H.O., do all of my own wrenching, NEVER came back to a loose bolt on the exhaust valves. With the bolts in/out quite often I just feel that with the Loc-Tite, you run the chance of "galling" the aluminum threads in the jugs, I.M.H.O.

Hope this helps!

Exhaust valves have been stainless for years and stainless replacements are available for some older models. Not sure of the change date maybe 06.

Usually helps to break the bellows nut loose with valve in bock to contain torque and prevent ripping a good bellows. No loctite needed when reassembling...never found one loose since the first VES motors.
