Exhaust valve backed off

Was out riding on the weekend when the motor seemed to get loud.. rode for about 30 mins, finally opened the hood, and noticed that the 4 allen bolts holding the exhaust valve down had loosened off and the thing was just flopping around.... Anyone ever had this happen? The sled is pretty new to me and I hadnt had the valves out yet.

Also I pulled it in to my buddies shop after and pulled both apart and cleaned them.. I assembeled the 4 allen bolts, the nut on the top of the valve, and the 4 bolts holding the cover on without using any loc tite, some of the old loc tite was still on there, but my buddy had none in his shop. Is this going to be a huge problem, I was planning on waiting until the next cleaning to add the loc tite, but if it needs to be done now, I will pull them apart again I guess... opinions?

Loctite is always a good idea on the 900. You can ride it and just check it when you stop until you get some loctite if your worried about it. Ten bucks say's they were left loose by the previous owner. I can see one or two working their way out but not all four.

I didn't put any on mine when I cleaned them this summer as I have never used any on my previous 800, just got it nice and snug.... hopefully it didn't need any:face-icon-small-sho

figured it would be all right as long as I keep an eye on it, if it did start loosening off and leaking it wouldnt lean out or anything would it? Just run like crap from improper valve operation? Thanks guys, ves is just new to me.

new question now, notice on my other exhaust valve there is a very small amount of oil on top of the bellow when looking through the hole in the cover, the sled runs just perfect, is it normal to see a bit of oil up there? If it does have a pin hole will the valve not open, or will it open sooner? Any chance of leaning out from a hole in the bellow? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn this crap.

small amounts of oil are normal. when you get time, check for any pin holes. you can get away with 1 "maybe" 2 small pin holes with zero effects on running issues...

if you start to get a bog midrange...confirm the hole size

Sounds good, thanks for the help, any chance of leaning out from bellow leak? I would assume not being that the solonoid pushes air under the bellow to open it.... Just not sure if I am understanding how it works correctly.

The solenoid is open allowing air to escape from under the bellows below a given RPM (64-6500 I think, not sure) at which point the solenoid valve closes and the pressure from the exhaust pushes on the bellows and opens the valve.
