Exhaust springs

Is there a trick to getting the hard to reach exhaust springs on?

I can't figure out how to attach the springs that hold the pipe down underneath the pipe on my 09 700 RMK.

Harbor Freight has a cool little tool that works well. I think it is for brake springs, but i use it for these springs you are talking about. It is about 8 inches long, has a hook on one end and a T handle on the other.

SPRING HOOK
Item # 95757
Manufacturer: Pittsburgh.
You can find it on their website. www.harborfreight.com

Hope this helps...Cheers!

I got a easy way!!

Take a OLD Flat blade screwdriver! longer better!!

Cut a slot in the blade with a die grinder!! at 45 degrees

Works Mint!

Flat screwdriver

The screwdriver is great... I've used it for years! From around the center of the blade maybe a bit more toward the handle, start the channel or cut at 30-45 degree angle toward the opposite tip of flat blade... Stop cut somewhere near the center of blade and you've got yourself an exhaust spring tool that works awesome!:face-icon-small-coo:face-icon-small-coo

I bend a piece of wire into a U, then hook it to the spring and pull with pliers. The screwdriver idea would probably work a lot better though.

a spring tool and a magnet works great. I just started using a magnet to get the springs hooked on the muffler bracket and to get them so I can hook them with the tool

The flat screw driver works great!!... I also cut a vertical slot in the tip of the flat blade so you can use it to push to stretch the springs as well. Remember that a piece of old pull rope works just as good if not better!!

Spring tool

Struggled with some deep hidden springs one day and one of my riding partners pulled out a length of paracord. Looped it around the spring end and pulled on the cord from about 18" away. Installed them the same way. Not one skinned knuckle.

As above....

Good old fashioned sturdy boot lace works bar none the best!!

Long enough to get your hands out of way when it pops loose, and enough to wrap around your hand for grip.

Try it, you'll never skin your knuckles again, and you'll throw your spring tools away!
