Exhaust sensor broken?

I took my exhaust sensor off to put in a new can. It was a pain, very tight, but I don't think I could have done anything to break it? Don't know. Anyway, the little ceramic piece that hangs down in the bottom of the sensor is broken into a couple pieces and rattling around in there. I see they are $150 new! Is this going to be a problem? Is it really necessary to replace it? I don't want to spend that kinda money on it unless I have to. I'm not sure I guess whether it monitors air fuel ratio or temp or what. Any info?

I'm pretty sure. Looking into the holes in the bottom of the sensor, there are a couple pieces of white ceramic rattling around. Very thin pieces, and I can see the thin slot it fits in about 1/4" ? up from the bottom. With a piece of ceramic still in the slot. Looks like it hung down suspended in the bottom of the sensor and the bottom piece broke off. I just can't imagine why they're $150, and really don't want to spend that much on it right now. I'll see how it runs when I get it going.

the 600 sdi will show a check engine light if the exhaust sensor has failed. Start it and if you don't get a check engine light, don't sweat the small stuff.
