Exhaust fan in garage

Looking for suggestion on an exhaust fan for the garage. I'm building a new garage and want to be able to start a snowmobile in there without having to open the garage door and let all the warm air out. Ideally I'd like something you put on the exhaust and a fan takes out all the fumes. Anyone have any links or ideas???

My son builds and installs carbon monoxide exhaust systems for Tech schools, auto repair shops etc. I would think a collector pan that sldes under the sled by the exhaust. That has a hose attached to it. Connecting to a small plenum with a fan that forces the exhaust into a hose and outside the garage would do the trick. Put the fan as close to the sled as possible for drawing the exhaust.
He builds exhaust manifolds and hoses that slip over vehicle tail pipes quite frequently. If you let me know how far tou want to push the exhaust to get it outside I'll have him figure up something.

I did some checking on that very thing when I built my garage a few years back. It was several grand for any of the systems I found by searching on the web so it was out. It's faster and easier to just open the garage door leave it up for a minute or 2, and then shut it. What I've found with floor heat, it may cool off the air inside the garage, but it's not that bad. It SEEMS to heat back up pretty quickly. I'd (obviously) recommend floor heat, melts the snow off your truck, nothing like laying on the ground on a warm slab of concrete!

I got a 2 foot square wall mounted exhaust fan in my garage. i just turn it on and open a window or two and it will keep garage air clean for the most part

Thanks for all the great replys. SnoKing I plan to have the exhaust tubing no more than 35' long. Any idea on the needed CFM?

Christopher where did you get your unit. That's what I'd love to have.

I think you have some concern about not wanting to exhaust all your garage heat.

Looking at standard bathroom exhaust fans, those typically range from 70 to 120 CFM. I would think that range would do just fine. That is if you are not making a direct connection to your exhaust outlet and just drawing from the area near it, which is what I was describing. If you make a direct connection like the system Christopher shows, then I would think 300 CFM minimum so as not to restrict your engine exhaust.

Put up some stove pipe with a small boost fan in it, make an adapter for a shop vac hose and fasten it to the sled exhaust. You don't want to put too much suction on a line sealed to the sled, it will not run right.

If you want to blow the stinky air out you also need a place for fresh air to get in. If it's a small fan no problem, the small gaps here and there in a garage will leak enough. If you go larger you will need a fresh air louver, preferably on the opposite wall for cross flow. Maybe just a hose with a form fitting belly attachment would be best.

Depending on what type of heat source you go with you may have to disable it from running while the exhaust fan is on so that flue gas isn't pulled down the chimney.

ive been waiting for this thread for a long time!!!!!!!! i work in the hydroponics industry, and i can tell you that that over priced looking unit that christopher put up is exactly that....over priced. all you need is an inline duct fan....do a google dearch on can-fan....these guys build the highest power fans on the market.....you could build a setup like that other unit for under 300 bucks....and that would top of the line. pm me if you got any questions....this is what i do. lol

easy equation to figure out how much cfm you will need.....find the size of the space you want to clean....base x width x height.....dived that number by how fast you want the air to be exchanged....somewhere between 1-4 minutes is usually the sweet spot. that gives you the CFM you will need to scrub the area clean. if your close to the kootenays in bc i can get a smokin deal on a fan.....got sizes all the way from 4" -20"

I went with the Fantech FG6 XL. It cost $155 and moves 483 CFM in a 6" duct. I will also wire it to a variable speed control. I am mounting it in the ceiling and am going to hang a hose that I can pull down and get close to, or connect to the exhaust (ANY IDEAS ARE WELCOME).

depends on how long your duct run it, but it should be enough fan too just put some 6 inch ducting close to the outlet. might not get every little bit, but definitly wont turn your garage into a hotbox...good idea, wish my garage would have been built by a sledder...lol...i just got a ghetto setup with a 8" can fan....works pretty good though.
