Exciter Bog Problems in Deep Powder

I am the proud new owner of two Yamaha Exciters. One '88 and one '91. They run great most of the time. The problem I am having is when I get into deep powder and start carving, both sleds sometimes bog out. The track will eventually stop and then the sled will not rev past 4500rmp...not enough to get the track going again. I can solve the problem every time by opening the hood. At this point the seld will rev again, track will spin and off i go with the hood open. Once out of the powder and can close the hood and all is well. The plugs don't seem to be fouling...both machines have 136" X 1.5" tracks, and the '91 has an aftermarket pipe, but besides this all stock. Any ideas on how to avoid this problem? I am guessing i'm getting snow in the intake or exhuast. but being new to sleds that is just a guess. the '91 has some of the insulation taken out from under the hood, but the '88's is all intact, so i don't know if this could be the problem. thanks for an ideas.
 
exhaust deflecter should help out, i had some problems with my summit 600 carving towards the exhaust side so i rigged up a deflector and it seemed to fix everything, no more boging
 
thanks for the info, where can i get an exhaust defelector? or just make one? does it deflect the snow from the exhaust pipe outlet or from where the pipe connects to the head? thanks for the help.
 
I remember the Exciter days
used to leave the right hood latch open so I could just reach over and pop the hood open when I needed to keep moving, kinda like manual bog control LOL
The 91 has a short snorkel on the right, try ducting it so it can get air from in front of your right knee
Whatever you do, fresh air is the answer, also the muffler outlet deflector is a must
 
exhaust outlet you can try and buy one not sure if they sell one, me personaly i would just build one much cheaper and you can have it out in the snow faster
 
thanks for all the info guys, i was misdirected early on that i was injesting snow, but when i opened the hood there was not a lot of snow around the intake...but...needing more air because the vents get clogged...makes much more sense...especially when it runs after i pull up the hood. i live 15 minutes from the snowy range in Wyoming so we ride powder 95% of the time...i might just take the hood off or rig up a better intake somewhere else. right on...thanks for the help.
 
I had an 89 and my bogging was snow ingestion! Snow gets trapped between the intake and headlight and bogged out. Ended up running snow through engine and when that snow compresses, you may as well be feeding it gravel. After the rebuild I cut holes in sides of airbox and ran 1 1/4" shop vac hose from there down above footwells to get air and blocked off stock top intake. Never had any more probs.
