ETEC Turbo Snow Sucked in, Running Problems

Hey Guys,

I just purchased a 2011 Skidoo etec 800 with an aerocharger turbo kit on it. I am new to the whole boosted world. To summarize: The sled ran great when I first started riding it. Shortly after realized the side vents on the sled have too big of holes in the screen and allowed some snow to get through and plug off the intake for the turbo. I cleaned it off, the sled ran strong again for a while but then lost power again and was bogging hard. I looked again and the turbo intake had a bit of snow on it, but not very much. I cleaned it up again and havent been able to get it running right since. I let the sled sit in a heated shop over night, hoping this would do the trick. Pulled it out again this morning with no luck. The sled is running rough. Barely idling. I have to play with the throttle to keep it going (the rpms stay at 1000 or under when it does stay going by itself). It doesnt want to rev out and just bogs. Did I get water into the cylinders and wreck something? Bad fuel? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

might have messed up reeds a little?

a little water wont hurt the motors, all the aero kits tend to suck in snow in fluffy pow, it blows up thru the foot wells and gets sucked in.

Unfortunately you will have to get the spark plugs out and access the damage from there.
snow injestion will most definately hurt the engine when you keep leting it happen on boost. the amount you take in directly cuts lubrication of the piston to cylinder and will score them up bad if left to continue.

be proactive and do your best to fix the problem. you have to get those spark plugs out and determine if one is fouled or beat to death from the cold water molecules cracking off the top ring land..

rotomaster first to 2 stroke boost. first to stroke records and wins ! 1981

In my experience if you sled doesn't idle at 1100-1300 then you have reeds that are blown. If you decide to check the plugs just replace them with brand new ones and make sure you index the new plugs right.

I'm 95% sure you have blown reeds.

Gus is dead on! If you keep sucking in snow you are essentially steam cleaning your piston and cylinder walls. If you run the aero kit in dry pow you will need a true cold air intake. Here are a few pics of the cold air intake I put together for the aero when I was running it on my 11 etec. I think aerocharger is developing a cold air intake so you might check with them.

The rough running is most likely reeds but don't keep flirting with snow ingestion! When you pull the throttle bodies and reed boots you can get a good look at the pistons as well.

When you get true cold air and eliminate snow ingestion they are boondocking animals!

good luck!

intake

If you want to do a DIY intake here is the link to the reducing elbow for the aero. I had to trim the 4" leg down a bit to get it to fit under the panel

The 3" flexible intake you can get at most auto parts stores.

You will need some 3" tubing of some kind to couple everything together and some outerwear prefilter over some kind of frame work for the pre-filter material.

The guys telling you to check the reeds are correct. The turbo and engine can take a little snow just fine, but for best performance do what you can to seal up the engine compartment. We have vent kits if you need em, and feel free to give us a call if you need help with anything else.

Well, I was able to have my sled sit in a heated shop for 12 hrs today. The sled started up first pull but is still idling like sh** . I noticed the check engine light is on and figured out how to read the codes. P0264 showed up. Could this be my problem? If so, what is the code? I do not have a service manual yet. Any help is greatly appreciated.

P0264 - PTO injector open circuit or shorted to ground.

Just an update here. It was the PTO side injector not working. One of the bolts holding the injector in was loose and allowed the injector to rattle around and break the power cable to the injector right where it is soldered on. Talked to skidoo mechanic who recommended putting a whole new injector in as soldering it would probably just cause trouble down the line. I'm hoping to get to a doo dealer out of town tomorrow and install the injector. I'm hoping BRP will cover this on good will. But we will see how it goes.
