Essential Tool Kit for XP... Need advice

For a 2010 XP Summit 163 x

What are the essential tools that should be carried in addition to the XP tools in the sled.

Not looking to haul around a tool truck... but not afraid of a small tool roll.

I would go for a small set of allen wrenches, vise grips, small cresent wrench, a 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, and 17mm end wrench. electrical ties. plug wrench, secondary tool. thats about all you should need. maybe a spring puller....vice grips have been known to take off some skin while removing exhaust springs
 
Spring puller dual purpose

An easy, near zero space spring puller substitute, you can use the piece of rope that comes in the XP tool kit. The rope works very well to get in to tight spaces, not a lot of force needed to remove springs. One less tool in your kit.
 
Arent there a lot of 16mm fasteners on an XP?

always throw my leather man in there as it has knife, pliers, screwdrivers..etc.

Also throw in a flashlight with a 12" bendable end in my pack. It has a magnet in the end. Can use it for picking stuff up off the bottom of the pan (it's really tight in there), or if something happens when it gets a little dark..or for signalling in case of a emergency.

I know we ran into a problem this year when a buddies suspension bolts backed out and got lost. Painful for him to get 20 miles back out. My summer project is to go through my XR and see what the most common size of bolt/nut/washer is on the machine and throw a coupleo f extras in my toolkit as a just in case. His Yammy is metric too so could save both of us.
 
I like to carry a long allen key wrench that fits the y-pipe bolts, prefreably the type with the ball on the end to deal with the angle. Also some tubing for syphoning gas or oil. and of coarse mechanics wire.
 
I added the torx screwdriver to take apart the start/reverse switch after one in our group went and put the sled in reverse unwanted. Was easy to unplug and got a new one on warranty but its not in the factory tool set.

I also now carry a throttle lever and brake lever in mine after we found that the bars were wider than some of the trees.:face-icon-small-ton:thumb: Got them both on E-bay for cheap.

Cable ties and Duct tape for everything else.

I replaced the brp tool items with good quality brand (mastercraft) and added 2-socket wrench, small crescent wrench, short needle nose-vice grips, utility knife, matches in a sealed container, a flat thin fridge door magnet, micro l.e.d. flashlight and short handle wire cutters for removing blown belt fiber that can wrap around the clutch. Blow a 288 belt and see how quick the aramid fiber will ruin all the blades in a knife before you can cut all of em' off - better to have the wire cutters.

The tools I hope not to ever use for myself, but rather will pull over and help someone else broken down or in need of a hand. I am surprised at how many sledders don't even haul a spare set of plugs around. What is not carried in the brp tool pouch fits in a small space in my packsack.

I would be Bring A Torx - 20 27 For the Polaris Ridding Buddies.. and Torx 30

allen wrench for the plastic slide for rear torsion spring - while adjusting a spring last year, it popped off the slide- goes back on easy if you pull off the slide from the rail first
 
Most of the tools that the other guys have said, but I would go through the machine and loctite everything that doesnt have to be removed easily on the hill for starters( I locktite every thing on all my toys, maybe should buy stock in permatex:face-icon-small-dis).

THe leatherman that the one gentleman said is a great tool to have, and one thing I found very valuable, and have saved alot of other people with it is safety wire and pliers. Had the wire a buddies pipe closed so he could get out of the backcountry, some guy had lost most of his exhaust springs so we wired it up to get him out, etc. Just get the heavier guage wire, not the light guage for wiring race bikes.
 
snap-on makes a small tool kit for harley's that comes in a zip up pouch swap out the standard sockets for metric and add a 10mm wrench and its every thing you need

If your blowing belts sounds like you need a clutch kit and some clutching.
