Error Code ECR 17 problem

I'm in Idaho right now having a blast sledding. My 09 M8 Sno pro threw a ECR 17 code on the way down the hill back to the truck today. I looked it up on the chart near the airbox and it said "exhaust temp sensor" So I looked and my exhaust temp sensor had come out of the pipe and was dangling near the motor mounts. Everything looked ok on the sensor so after it cooled I put it back in and tighted it up a bit. Started it up and it still is throwing the ECR 17 code. Its idling at 2300-2400 rpm instead of 1900. Do I need to have this code reset by the dealer with the computer? Can you re-set codes on these sleds, if so, how? Since I know what it was and put the sensor back in, will riding it clear the code? Thanks!

The code will clear when a good sensor is installed. Those are pretty fragile and banging around under the hood probably damaged it. You can ride with a bad sensor but it will probably start pulling some timing and you'll lose top end power. The ECU didn't throw a code until the sensor broke. You can pull the sensor out of the pipe and run the sled with it plugged in and it won't flash the code. I'm guessing that the wires are broken right at the end of the metal jacket.

Your sensor has failed. You need a new one. Check the wiring below the sensor, I have seen some that the wires were burned, but when yours came out of the pipe it bounced around and was damaged.

I was surprised - but it appears that the wire did not get broken or burned by the y-pipe. The wire looks good all around and the connection to the sensor looks good too. I'll look into getting the sensor checked and possibly replaced if the local cat shop has one.

look in the very end of the sensor. The probe is more than likely broken. You can tell because it will move around inside.

Yep, replace the sensor. My M8 threw the same code, found a new sensor on Ebay for cheap, replaced it, no more code. It also slowed down the idle a bit. My wires were good, but the very end of the sensor had broken off. It is thin and very fragile.

I have an 09 M1000 153 SP that periodically showed an ECU17 code but cleared during the day while I was riding it. The engine and exhaust is bone stock and it is still under warranty. Should I expect my warranty to cover this and replace the sensor? Any chance they will give me back the old one that appears to work intermittently to keep as a spare? Thanks.
