engine seize- your opinion

so heres the story. friday new years eve we go on a ride when its 0 degrees outside. we ride about 20 miles into the backcountry and my engine seizes. the first time it seized we rolled the clutch over manually and got it started. i ran it one cylinder to get it out of the whole we were in, then it seized again and we couldn't get it to move at all. we pulled the plugs and my PTO side cylinder was smoking and i could smell antifreeze. so we towed it out today and are going to dig into it tomorrow. i'm just wondering if anyone knows what it could possibly be or what i should be looking for when im tearing it apart tomorrow. and also do you know what might have caused it? thanks

if you have antifreeze in the cylinder you either have a leaking gasket or you now have a new hole into the water jacket. What oil are you using? Extreme cold temps are one reason to run synthetic oil.

not sure that was a good choice, don't know what the quality of Torco is.

ya im thinking the same. my dealer says they have tested torco side by side with polaris gold and they claim its the same but i never had any problems before so i dont know

HAHAHA I've been running TORCO full synethic for 1400miles on my 05 900, LOVE IT, smells like berries and it stills pours at -30. I rode TODAY with windchills in the -20, never had an issue and other torco users will tell you the same. There are so many threads on this site about oil, search and you'll see the pos. and neg. on all oil. Somewhere someone has locked up an engine using every oil there is. My buddy has ran a mtn cat 800 and an m7 running a different oil everytime he rides with 0 issues, both of his sleds run perfectly.

Now this is just my 2cents, some will agree others will not, take it or leave it. I doubt it was your oil, antifreeze in a cylinder makes things sticky.

Grant

Thanks Grant, That is the kind of feedback I was looking for. I haven't seen any info on Torco oil so I could not personally say good or bad about it. I agree, someone on here has blown an engine on every oil out there and they all blame the oil when they more than likely had some other underlying issue.

Agreed, i can't say it wasen't the oil but the fact he has antifreeze in the cylinder leads me to believe there was another issue there. A tear down is a must, rebuild and get back out there!

as z-man has said af in the cylinder means head o-ring is out at very least or base gasket leaking internally, or some catastrophic problem in the lower end either way the motor needs to come out and be torn down to pinpoint.

Like I told you Cade, pull the head and cylinder see just how bad it is, then go after the root cause! I would check that leaking oil line you told me about for sure. You don't want to fix it and have the same thing happen again!

On a lighter note, Does anyone know how I can get a little more life out of the belt on my old 800? Dragging that slug of Bannocks out was pretty hard on the old girl! The Belt is toast for sure!!! LOL!!!

Oh and I still can't believe the Boss Blacked your eye in front of us all yesterday! I bet you will think twice before you burn your sled down again!!!! LMAO!!!!

leaking oil line could have killed your engine for sure if it didn't get enough oil.

torco, used to run it all the time..to the tune of 2-55 gallon drums over 4 seasons between customers and friends..good stuff..

well after a partail tear down today i found that the oil line going to the bearing on pto side of the crank is gone. so we are thinking (hoping) that we just locked up that bearing. more tear down throughout the week. thanks for all the input.

That don't sound good! Hope for the best! If you need that crank rebuilt, let me know, I know just the guy to do it and he is one of the best! (1200 PSI). Although I am curious about the antifreeze in the cylinder! Bad crank and antifreeze in the cylinder is a real bad sign. How did the piston and cylinders look when you pulled them?
