Engine removal, stator harness

Do you really have to remove the gas tank to disconnect the stator harness, or am I missing a trick? Thats the last string holding my motor in place, and I would really rather not remove the seat and tank if not necessary. I think removing a motor from a ford fusion is easier....

This is on a 2005 fusion 900 if it matters.

:face-icon-small-tonIm not sure on your fusion but if you going to pull the engine why not pull the few nuts that hold that tank in and just slip it back out of your way. I know it was much nicer having my tank off my RMK when I pulled my engine.

Well b/c thats the only thing holding the motor from coming out of the pig...I read through the manual, but it just said disconnect the stator harness...doesnt mention anything about removing tank and seat. So I thought maybe I was overlooking a connector somewhere.

Thanks for the input guys. Sled has been a headache this season.

There is a bolt securing the wires from rubbing on the steering post coming from the stator thats located on the back of the engine, kinda hard to get to.... I pulled my oil/coolant res to get to it. Other than that u have to at least pull the tank back to get to the harness.

Just did that tonight and bad news gotta pull the tank.
Get the little plastic tool for the fuel connections works pretty quick.

Im assuming the seat has to come off for the tank to come off? Im not by the sled now, just curious what kind of project I will be getting into this weekend. Hopefully I only have to do this once....

Really simple to remove seat and fuel tank. Can be done in less than fifteen minutes. Remove two bolts going up through the rear of the tunnel and pull the seat off. Disconnect the lines and wires to the tank and remove the two mounting nuts at the rear of the tank and remove. There now its done. :face-icon-small-hap

Pulling the tank takes about 5 minutes.

If you have your engine up and you put a lot of strain on the harness.... there is a 50/50 chance you ruined the wiring harness.

With the tank off... lots of the work becomes very easy... easy to clean and inspect the problematic wiring harness.

I tell everyone at your stage of work to simply replace that crappy wiring harness... the new ones are built much better (though they wont take tugging on them either)

Whats a good replacement for the wiring harness? Certain year? Or just new what it was built with?

Also curious MH...what harness do you purchase to replace the stock fusion harness? Or did they just start beefing them up? I didnt pull on the harness, but thats why I was curious if there was possibly a connector under the mag cover.

My guess would be a new factory harness that the sled was built with since they only made the 900 for 2 years and the 06 900's have four injectors instead of 2 injectors like the 05 900's

yep... new harness from polaris parts are improved.

Ask Diamond Dave what he thinks of the 900 wire harness quality.
Mountainhorse, in what way did they improve the harness?
Going to be pulling the motor in mine someday and have indy dan do one of is tm upgrades to it and I am very interested in finding out the benefits of replacing the harness.
