Engine overheated..

My father in-law borrowed my fuse 9 and he hasn't really used a liquid before. Was riding slow over a good stretch of glare ice and he said he seen the temp go to 240f. He didn't arrive after he said he would so I went to go look for him and found him. Had no more coolant so towed it back. When we got back did a compression test and they are 135/140 psi. So topped off with anti freeze and ran it for a bit. Now constantly loosing some antifreeze. Not a quick loss, just a slow leak. Not leaking anywhere so got to be into the cylinder and o-rings on the head are melted.

Now my question is, would the gaskets still be good? I ordered a complete gasket kit a couple weeks ago and was wondering should I just change the o-rings? He said to try get back he would go a bit after lost anti freeze and then cool it off then go again but not letting the temps get past 140-150. Only have about 400-500 miles on rebuilt engine so maybe the gaskets would still be good?

gasket are no good now, got way to hot when you take it apart you will see the o rings have melted spots on them like you said that where you are losing your coolant now.I would not use them again that for sure.base gasket should be good .

WOW, That's hot:eek::eek:

Ya, get yourself a new set of o-rings for the head and you should be good to go...... O ya, make sure your father in law never rides the sled ever again, lol;):beer;

Thanks guys...

Never seen an engine get that hot and won't have time to take a look at it til the weekend, figured I would ask beforehand so I can know what to expect.

LOL, yeah, its a good thing they only come for a visit once in a while. Now I know to go with him next time and let him use my fathers 550.. :D

Just got the gasket set on his coins. He asked what parts I needed after it happened. I should've been said "oh no, engine is all fried so we are goin to have to send it to HTG to get it rebuilt" HEHE I would have loved that, an early christmas gift from them...

Got o-rings installed..

and changed the gaskets also. O-rings weren't really melted but enough for coolant to leak through (as in saying that inner o-rings were a bit thinner than outer so coolant was getting into the cylinder. Not sure why the inner melted a bit more?)
Also exhaust/ y-pipe gaskets were sticky to get off. Had to scrape off. Changed base gaskets also.
Thermostat was collapsed stuck open. Wish I took a pic before throwing it.
Piston, rings and cylinder are all good yet, no scratches or nicks.

Now have engine back in and just waiting for a new thermostat.
