Engine making popping noise when letting off throttle

Hi,

02 800 Edge. When I let off the throttle and the rpm's drop to around 4000 to 2500 I can hear a popping sound. It doesn't happen everytime, but enough to know something is lean. I don't have any issues with acceleration or mid to high performance. Its just when I left off the throttle I hear that popping sound when the engine goes back to idle in that range I mentioned.

I'm thinking I'm lean on the air screw? or could it be a needle issue? I'm really not sure which one to try first. I believe my main jet is correct, however, if its on the lean side and you let off the throttle will that cause the popping since there isn't enough fuel left? I've checked my plugs and feel they are the right color, it has been doing this for a bit.

Any help is appreciated!

Popping

If this is something new and you haven't made any changes then you need to look for some kind of a failure. Check for a cracked carb adapter, air leak in the pipe or even a blown seal. If it's a backfire them you may have an air leak in the exhaust. This will ignite unburned fuel in the pipe when you let off the throttle. Also when the throttle closes, vacum goes up on the carbs and will pull air in through any leak in the motor.

First check how much throttle freeplay you have, it should only be .010" to .030" measured between the throttle lever and throttle block. Too much and the throttle safety switch can cut in, causing a missfire.

Engine popping

I had a similar problem on my 04 escape 800. What I found turned out to be the easiest of the suggestions to fix. You don't say if you have a left hand throttle or not but that was part of my problem. The plate the LHT cable attaches to affects the lever position. Also the swivel where the cable attaches to the plate had some how tightened. These things affected the throttle lever settings. Also I found the throttle and LHT cables needed to be lubed. When I would let off the throttle the lever wouldn't close like it was supposed to which left both TPS switches open. Easiest way to check this is to unplug the wires and see if the problem continues. Just got back from McCall Id and some hard riding. Had no popping or dying problems. Hope yours is as easy to fix as mine was.
