Is there a number like 911 that you can send a text message to in an emergency? Sometimes we get into areas where cell coverage is spotty and you can't make a call out, but you can still send/receive a text message. Has anybody ever heard of this before?

Send it to someone that knows where you are and when you were expected back?

They could relay information more efficiently to emg svcs if they know certain things ahead of time.

It is still in the testing phase but you could be seeing it within 2 years depending on the 911 dispatch area you are in. There are 5 test counties that completed testing of this system in late 08, one of them was King County (Seattle) I believe. You will also be able to send pics and videos. Would be extremely helpful if your house was being robbed and you wanted send for help without being noticed.

Good point! Alot of areas we ride are the same way. Good enough signal for a text, but cannot make a call. Like was mentioned, I think I would text a freind that knows the area, tell them via text wherre I am and what the emergency is and have them make the call. I would bet at that point if the 911 operator wanted to contact you directly, that the middle man could give 911 your # and then 911 could contact you via text. Good food for thought.

Another good point is texts if there isn't service will store in your outbox as unsent, next time you get any service, it will send the message even if you only briefly pass through a service zone.

Thanks for the info guys!

I was thinking about the Spot system for myself, but thought that maybe there was another way to pass on to the snowmobile club also.
