EMAIL to REI

T
To the REI Board Members,

Just recently while reading some of my favorite mail (If there is such a thing). Which includes the REI catalog and dividend report I was also reading some of my other favorites. I stumbled upon a disturbing article. This article was discussing the closure of many public areas to the use of OHV’s (Snowmobiles, ATV, ect..) The organization supporting their efforts is the Winter Wildlands Alliance. To my dismay many of the companies I purchase equipment specifically for snowmobiling from support this organization. You can find the sponsor list here http://www.winterwildlands.org/about/corporate.php . So let me recap my purchases at your store in just the last 12 months.

Lowes Mountaineering Boots ($500+) and accessories
Garmin GPS ($500+ $125 mapping software)
Snow Shovels
Benchmade Knives (At least 2)
Avalanche Beacons (Tracker 2)

And that is just what I can remember, and does not included my mandatory Christmas Shopping that I normally do at your store or that others do for me because I am generally very specific in what I want and where to get it. In short I spend thousands at REI. I have also spent my $140+ dividend from the last year and I thank you. There is about $10 left on it, but you can keep it. I do not plan on shopping at REI ever in the future.

As and outdoor recreation outfitter please remember that a person may do different types of outdoor activities. I for instance have skied since I was 6 years of age and some years over a 100 days a year. I hike 14er’s. Camp, Fish, Hunt and many other activities that do not included OHV’s. But I also snowmobile, ATV, and Trail Ride Dirt bikes. Sadly I will now find other retail establishments that can supply me with the gear that these activities need.

I also understand that certain areas should be restricted, but this is not Winter Wildlands Alliance or Sierra Club’s agenda.

Sincerely

Nice email.

REI has been supporting this kind of bullpuckey for years. I haven't set foot in one of their stores since 2007 when I found out as well.

They can suck it...

I use their rest rooms and parking lot--last items I bought from them was some climbing rope, shoe laces--never spend more than $20.00/yr.

We go to their "free" avy class, wear our DOO hats, and sit in the front row!:face-icon-small-coo

I canceled my membership 9 yrs ago.

Just curious, are there any outdoor sporting stores that don't contribute to the Wilderness Campaign? I know Cabelas does. Crappy thing is, where is a hunter supposed to buy gear and supplies? REI=FAIL, Cabelas=FAIL, Bass Pro?

Bass Pro is out too, they sponsor a bunch of stuff for Backpacker magazine. I found this pretty surprising considering they don't really carry much stuff in the way of hardcore backpacking gear.

"I also understand that certain areas should be restricted, but this is not Winter Wildlands Alliance or Sierra Club’s agenda. "

I think this is the plainest and most important statement that can/should be made. The statement approaches the plain truth of "the Second Amendment ain't about duck hunting, folks." It gets the point across that these are not nice organizations that want to save some poseys. Can I borrow it?

I GOT A RESPONSE (More Smoke Where the Sun Don't Shine)

Mr. XXXXX,

Thank you for taking the time to contact REI and sharing your concerns about Winter Wildlands Alliance. I am responding to you on behalf of the Board of Directors. REI’s support of the organization directly focuses on its SnowSchool program, a national outdoor program established to introduce more children to the outdoors during the winter season, as we believe it’s an effective program that aligns with our interest. Our partnership is not focused on the organization's advocacy efforts and we are not engaged in these efforts.

REI's focus is on encouraging participation in the human-powered outdoor activities that we provide products for. While our members and customers use our gear for a variety of activities, our roots and expertise are in the areas of hiking, backpacking, bicycling, skiing, snowshoeing, paddling and climbing. Our goal is to promote and grow these activities and encourage stewardship of the lands and waters where these sports take place. Our donations program also supports this mission.

I have shared your feedback with our Board of Directors and Giving team for future consideration. I hope you find this information useful and that REI is able to continue to serve your outdoor needs.

Best,
Bethany

ABSOLUTELY

And My Response (I am also done wasting my time now)

Mrs. Hawley,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Here are a few more thoughts I would like you to please also share with the board.
· I have included the Winter Wildlands Alliance and Mission Statement for your convenience below. I fail to see that the organizations core concerns are promoting youth outdoor activities. (I search the majority of their web site too, and yes they have a SnowSchool program, but if it were their main concern you would think it would be mentioned in the Mission). Not the front page headlines that ran “closed this area to OHV’s this week, Beat up on Snowmobile Dealers Next Week, and Petition Forest Service to remove snowmobile loophole the following”.
· Your “partnership”, as you so eloquently put it, but you really mean donations from our “co-op” do support these advocacy efforts whether you like it or not. My guess is that the $10,000 check from REI to WWA did not say “only for the promotion of your SnowSchool program” , but I could be wrong. I and most of the Colorado Snowmobiling Community would be happy to take the same youth groups to areas of Colorado’s Backcountry that could most likely never be reached by the WWA. But these same accesses are what WWA wants to close to those youth that may want to ride a snowmobile and ski the same areas.
· To hide the agenda of these organizations behind a veil of “youth support” is disappointing.

Again thanks for the response, I am sorry to say that although informative your response has not changed my opinion or stance in the matter and I will buy all future outdoor equipment elsewhere.

Thanks,
Brad

Mission Statement
Winter Wildlands Alliance is a national nonprofit organization promoting and preserving winter wildlands and a quality human-powered snowsports experience on public lands.
About WWA
· Formed in February, 2000, the WWA is the first and only national organization working on behalf of snowshoers, skiers, snowboarders, winter hikers, and other outdoor adventurers, addressing national issues that impact our winter wildlands.

We believe winter wildland adventurers and future generations should have sizable areas of public land on which to experience the natural sights, sounds, and winter beauty of public lands free of motorized vehicles, and that our backcountry wildlife habitat should be protected from the negative impacts of motorized intrusion such as snowmobiles. We also believe it is the mandate of federal land-management agencies to responsibly manage motorized access to these cherished assets to ensure their protection for future generations.

As activists, WWA builds relationships with grassroots snowsports and conservation groups, providing networking opportunities and useful resources. The Alliance publicizes national issues and maintains a national presence by communicating regularly with Forest Service, Park Service, and Congressional representatives, commenting on draft plans and encouraging agencies to adopt nonmotorized-friendly policies. We provide useful information to activists through an online information clearinghouse and action alert network. And our work and initiatives continue to grow.

Wilderness Campaign?
I visited there website and conservation partners and could not find anything too negative http://www.cabelas.com/content.jsp?pageName=ConservationPartners&WTz_l=Footer. Have you seen something else. This was my back up plan.
