What's the word on electronic dog fences?

How well do they work, easy to put in, etc?

We have a beagle and up until now he was fine on a cable, but he is needing more freedom to run around. So our options are either chain linking the yard or going electric.

Electric sure seems easy and cheaper, just not sure how it all works. Will it only jolt when he gets close or is it constant if he runs? How deep do you bury it?

Also how do they work when the ground freezes and has 2 or 3 feet of snow on top?

i have used that one and it works real well. need to replace batteries in collar every 3-4 weeks becuase the dog will get smart and know when the batteries are good and bad. works great for a small yard and have no ploblems with it transmitting through the house

I have that setup made by pet safe. I use it for my husky. You can adjust the range. I believe it has a perimeter of about 90' from a center point. The dogs collar will beep before it shocks them so they get zapped once or twice then the beep deters them. You can add collars for multiple dogs. They also sell a 12 volt adapter so you can take it with you. I take it with me when we go to our cabin or visit friends and plug it in and set a perimeter. So that is real sweet. As far as snow on the ground. I have never had a problem and we average over 6' in the winter. Only drawbacks are the batteries are super pricey 9 bucks for two and petsafe is the only one who makes them. If the battery is in the collar it will only last 2-4 weeks depending on how much your dog tests the boundaries. The only way to turn off the collar is to take the battery out. My dog is pretty much trained to stay in the yard now so we only put the collar on when we leave. The other drawback is Trees and other buildings can block the signal. If your dog is super smart they can figure out how to snake around the signal. All in all it is definetly worth the money and my dog is alot happier not getting tied up all the time

thanks donner.

I was wondering how the perimeter works....didn't think of the garage, etc messing with it. I was more wondering how to seal off the driveway, etc.

I have the PetSafe wireless unit too. Overall we are very satisfied with the unit. The customer service from the company has also been very good. We had an issue that we couldn't figure out if it was the transmitter or the collar. They sent out a new collar first for free. When that didn't cure the problem they then sent out a new transmitter. I would buy one again no question.

the batteries mine has are the 2032 flat round ones. about $4 for 2 that you can get any where. buildings don't mess with the signal because if the colar gets out of range where it doesn't recieve signal from box then it zaps the dog.

I think there is a couple different models. Mine uses the more expensive 6 volt batteries. My dog was able at first to get free without getting zapped by snaking around trees. If you play with transmitter location you can eliminate any dead spots.

i see. i put mine in the garage about 6' off the ground with no problem. it actually had to shoot through about 50' of house

I have the wireless one made by PetSafe. Works awesome. You can set it up for a max of 90 foot radius. I put one on each end of the house so the dog can go on each end 90 feet out. collar batteries last about a month or two depending on how often the dog tries to escape. It will beep at the dog first with no shock about 5 feet from the edge of the zone. if the dog keeps going it then shocks. shocks untill the dog comes back within range. if the dog keeps going it shocks for 30 seconds straight and then shuts off. 6 different intensity levels to choose from depending on how stubborn your dog is. works great. way better for the dog than being kenneled up in my opinion. gives them some freedom.

I have used DogWatch hidden fence for 8 years or so, works GREAT! 1/2 the price of Invisiable Fence. Battery in DW systems only needs to be replaced every year or so.

We also use it indoor to keep our dog on the main level only. Dog goes up either stairs she gets zapped.

The systems from the pet stores are probably just as good. Key is to train the dog properly and it will work.

Good luck.

Battereis from DogWatch (systems we use) are very pricey as well. The interstate battery stores have the same thing for 1/3rd the cost.

haha kinda funny I just got my petsafe in the mail today and like a kid with a new toy I had to try it out...poor dog

ordered it from http://www.gundogsupply.com/pif-300.html for $229.95 free shipping.

Well, the dog won't hardly leave my legs now what a wake up call for her!

I did like the instructions said, put the flags out at the right spot by testing the collar where it starts beeping

Then I put the petsafe collar on the dog + her regular collar with a leash on her.

Took her outside a ways from the flag and starting tossing treats on the ground. eventually I tossed a treat near the flag, dog went for treat...collar beeped then she started screaming bloody murder!

I had the collar on lvl 3 I think, has 6 lvls so I thought in the middle oughta do it. I turned it back to lvl 1

I stopped the training after the first buzz, but walked around outside casually and she wandered into the flags and it zapped her again..I had to literally dig her out of mommas flowers at the front door. lvl 1 is plenty for this dog.

She's still traumatized, very timid tonight which isn't really what I want in a hunting dog.

ya, she won't be running away anytime soon! I just hope she'll still potty outside and not in her bed, she never has a mistake in the house, this might change that??

I used the Invisible Fence system for about 10 years. "Fenced" in about 26 wooded acres (yeah, that was a treat to bury ). My recollection is that the instructions said to bury the wire about 10"-12" deep, but I believe that we only went down about 8". Worked awesome. Dogs (a lab and a doberman) would chase a deer up to about 5 feet from the fence and then clamp on the binders big time. The system I had around 8 different intensity settings and also allowed you to set for a warning beep before they got the zapper. Never had any problems with snow interfering with the signal. Only had the buried wire break once in 10 years. Used an RF choke from Radio Shack and a radio to find the break. Took about 45 minutes to find and 10 minutes to fix. I would absolutely use an Invisible Fence again.

I can't comment on the other brands as I've never used one. Like someone already said, some of the other brands were cheaper, but when I bought mine, I was working for the Amateur Field Trial Club, and at the time and we got a discount on the Invisible Fence products.

Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions.

Take her outside, walk her around the lot perimater, as you do so every few flags, shake the flag and say watchout. You don't need to shock her she will figure that out. Do this for a couple of days and she will be good to go.

I bought this fence minus the remote trainer.
http://www.radiofence.com/dog-fences/innotek-ultrasmart-dog-fence-5100.htm

To install the fence I used a lawn edger and I bent every other blade out a little bit so it would make about a 1/2" gap in my lawn. Using this method it made a channel about 1/2" X 2-3" deep and we just laid the wire in the channel. About a month later we couldn't see where we put the fence anymore. Took me and the girlfriend one evening to put in the whole system and I have 2.5 Acre lot which I went all the way around. Our English Setter was shocked twice and two weeks later I took all of the flags done and he has never tried to even test the fence that I have seen.

I would recommend this fence to anyone who was thinking about it.
