Shoulder injury and old age may require electric start. Dealer quoted $950 installed. Anyone self installed a kit? Cost, etc.

Yes I have and it is not bad, especially if you have a stand and get the sled up in the air. I bought a used setup and all the pieces where with it. But do not make the same mistake I did. I re-used the torx screws I get with it that secure the ring gear to the clutch. I found out the hard way they are a one time use. Even though I used red locktite they came loose and the starter ring came off and caused some damage. I am sure if it is a new kit they are fine but if it is a takeoff order new torx screws and locktite them in!

I am sure a kit comes with instructions but if not you can email at rickster@bbc.net You will have to pull your can and pipe. I took then hood off as well. If the sway bar is still installed you will have to unbolt the left side to access a hole in the pan to put one of the starters bolts in. The electics and battery mounting on the pipe side are pretty easy and simple. I had a helper and we hooked up the leads to the starter before bolting it in place. The hardest part was re-tightening some of the y-pipe bolts that had work loose. They are a P.I.T.A. to get to!

I located mine through snowest. It was a used takeoff and was very reasonable. The factory kit can be pricey, especially the years/models that did not come with the ring gear already on the clutch. On the older sleds you are more likely to find the pieces via a part out.
