egt probe location using band clamps

I have a koso egt guage on the way. From the instructions on the website, they want the probes put 4 inches from the piston skirts but after doing a search it seems that unless they are welded in you can only get 3 inches away using the clamps. Anyone have them 3 inches away using the clamps? Do they give an accurate reading? Going on a 09 800 rmk by the way. thanks!:face-icon-small-hap

I highly recommend welding them at the correct distance or your temp readings will be off. It's very easy to do. Take your y pipe off, drill your holes, then weld up. If you don't have a welder take it to someone who does and have a shop do it. If you bring it to me I would do it for you for free because it's like 5 min weld job. Never mind I just saw you are in AB.

ok, thanks guys...I'll pull the y-pipe and get them welded in:face-icon-small-hap
Another note. I think its best to push them all the way in when tightening the stop nut. I put mine so they were spaced in the middle, like shown in the picture, and wasn't getting, what I feel, was correct temps based on plug readings. Pushed them all the way in and saw 75 degree hotter. Also once you install tighten them tight, warm the sled up and then tighten them once the nut is hot. You almost have to tighten them until they feel like they are going to strip out before they will snug up. Good luck and have fun!
