EGT numbers?

I really don't know how to asnwer your question.

I have EGTs on my 09 M8 and the mid range is the only place that I see what I consider scary numbers. I saw 1365 degrees a few times and thought I was going home on the end of a rope but, the sled never missed a beat and I torn down the engine at the end of the season to send to SLP and everything looks fine.

I don't know the optimal number to shoot for but it must be in the 1250 degree range.

I was kinda thinking the same. Is that the number you look for through low mid and high?

you have to compare your other factors first to make sure you are safe then the egt temps are relative to the other indicators...plug reading and wash...but it takes a while for wash to be an indicator so plug reading as a start...your optimum temps could be a hundred degrees different then mine but we both have safe plug reading...once you have safe plug reading at say 15 sec 3/4 throttle...thats your temp...then full throttle burst for 1/4 mile..good plug reading...thats your temp thats applicable...but work in shorter distances/safe plug to longer distance safe plug in your differant throttle settings...look for F-Bombs posts and he has the good info on this

several factors in play....where is your egt probe located?...are readings taken on a flat surface, or on a steep hill in deep snow?....duration of the run...i've had several m's, 7s, 8s, and 1000s.....the 1000s have always had the highest egts, touching on 1400 after about 45 secs on an uphill run...this with probe in the pipe, about 2 inches downstream from the junction of the pipe/y-pipe......the 8s are usually about 50 to 75 degrees less and the 7s slightly less than that....when i first saw the egts approaching 1400, shut down and pulled the plugs, lean, but still ok....after a few engine mods and a fuel controller, i try for about 1325 max, but know that it's ok to go over a little, but never more than 1375.....i've had 3 1000s and never seized or had any other engine failure.....i've also used 1325 as a max for my m8s, and never had a problem there either....have fun...

probe location not an issue (not saying it can be way out of wack)if you relate the temps to the other primary indicators as the baseline for temp reading

theory wise but not likely temps could be 1000 degrees and your running right..or 1375 and everything is ok..but the plugs/wash marry or establish your personal temp zone...and everyones temp zone is a personal issue with their machinet with the temp the secondary consideration..

Frosty,

Where did you mount your probes? When you first installed your egt guages, did you come up with a correlation of some kind of exhaust temp on a long pull to plug color or something? If so please explain.

the m8 are very lean at power valve opening...very high numbers...you just have to throttle through that zone and not cruise there..and you can;t remove it with a purelogic box without going too rich in the other zones..it just a fact of the 8....maybe other controllers

I ran my egts on the sled stock, got some numbers then added mods and ran it at the same number. very clean and crisp

here. try this.
