EGT guage questions

Dumb question but I cant find the answer Im looking for in the search. How many people are running single vs dual egt set ups on there m's? Also where are you mounting the probes with each set up? I assume in the y pipe? Also what are you max egts you want to set the guage at when running a dual set up and vise versa a single set up. Thanks

I'd run dual EGTs so you can easily see which side is doing what. Probe placement depends on if you're running pipes and where the manufacturer specs that out. On a single, I've run mine 4" from the piston, ~2" up the Y pipe. Max EGTs are really dependent upon where your probes are placed.

EGTs should only be used as a tuning aid. Every motor is different and probe placement can vary yielding different results. What you NEED to do is check plugs/piston wash and correlate that information to what your EGTs are telling you. Once you verify your setup via plugs/wash you can safely (or more safely) watchh your EGTs and know what your motor is doing. Without doing that, you're playing with fire.

EDIT: aluminum melts at 1250* so that is the temp to watch for....but that CAN vary based upon EGT location, etc...

Duel EGT's. 4" from the skirt on the exhaust side of the piston.

I try to run at 1200. Max 1300 for a second or so.

Koso's.

Works well no issues.

Ill be running an slp single with mbrp can, tsled intake. I was figuring on placing the probe probes in the y. So give or take 2 inches up the y pipe is good proper placement?

BC2k, thanks for asking this question. Saved me doing so in a few weeks!

Where to you pick up the 12 volt power source? I dont want to burn anything up. well, not yet.

The best power source is behind the heat shield protecting the wiring on you steering post. looking from the front of the sled it will be on the right hand side up towards the top by the 1" alumin frame piece. The connection has a standard AC plug with the black wire tied back into itself. You should get the correct end and connect your Gauge and plug it in. I was in a hurry and just cut the AC plug off and used crimp butt splices.

Good post! Getting ready to install my dual Koso this weekend and needed to know also. I have the SLP Y-pipe so to do the two probe placements I need to completely remove the Y-pipe and drill it on the bench? Also, since it is ceramic, does it not work to have the two bungs welded on?

Pull the Y off or you could get metal shavings down into your motor, doesn't take too long to do it right. You'll want to take a grinder and peel back some of the ceramic coating and expose the metal, approximately the size of a nickel should be sufficient. Weld 'em up. After that, I'd tape the Y off for overspray and repaint the bungs and exposed metal with some hi temp paint.

I just took the steel center portion out of my hose clamp on EGT probe holders. I had them welded on my SLP ceramic Y pipe.

The guy that welded them for me wasn't very pleased with the results (how the welds look) because he's a perfectionist but, they sure aren't going anywhere. Yet, I worry a little bit about the edges of the welds may eventually be a spot where future cracks develop.

I just bought my dual window Koso, used 1 season, from a guy on here shipped for $225.

Would you mind posting a few pics of your bung weld job? Do the egt kits come with instructions of where to weld the bungs? I'm sure I'm not alone in that I need to do this, but I have many questions about how to do it the right way.

where is the best place and cheapest to buy an egt guage...what are people paying for a dual koso or the similar?

Got my dual Koso with high speed EGT brand probes from Code Red Performance. Good price and they were real helpful. He has a post in the Swapmeet section.

Used clamp-on probes on the SLP y-pipe, 4" from skirt. We'll see how that works throughout the season. Figured I can always weld the bungs on later if needed.
