Whats the difference between a Vertical Edge vs Vertical Escape? I see both types for sale in ads in the 2002-2003 ish year range which I'm looking at.

A Vertical Escape is in the Edge chassis, it's just a catchy name that they came up with for that line of sleds that had a few extras over the standard RMK's.

In 2003, there were a lot of differences. Different seat, gas tank, PERC with reverse, Team secondary, lighter trailing arms, different shocks, new 159" series 4 track..... also there was only one model Escape that year.

In 2004 the standard RMK's recieved most of the Escape package items. Also, they had a line of "Escapes" with 600, 700, and 800 motors. You had your choice of track length too.

I thought that was 05... oh well.

The 03 Escape had at least the following stuff that the standard Edge didn't in 03:
Perc reverse, Series IV 159" track, color scheme (very sexy I might add), lightweight fixed width trailing arms, lightweight rear skid, lightweight bogie wheels, Boss inspired lightweight seat that was taller than the Edge seat, upgraded shocks (most were Ryde FX, some were Fox) T-top steering post (shorter and lighter with a riser block stock), TEAM clutch, leather handlebar pad, leather cover over a clear tank, DET, phantom chain case, and probably more stuff I'm forgetting.

All 03 and up came with the series 4 track. The boigies are the same also. The rest is correct.

But for 03, wasn't the Escape the only one available with a 159" stock? I might be wrong on the bogies, but I know they at least look different than the standard issue Poo bogies- no design on them (except the ones on the axle), just solid black.

Oh yeah, and BTW DallanC, 03 was the first year for the Escape.

I believe the only sled with the option of the 159 track was the escape. I snowchecked one that year, other NON escape models ( Edge) came with track options up to 156. Cowboy you are right with your list of items on the escape. It listed 486 dry as I believe too. Another LW item was the stearing post. It was Ti but they had recalls on them due to bad welds at the Tee on the post. You had the option of getting a replacement Ti steering post or going with a steel one. I opted for steel since the Ti's were on back order. You are also right about the boggies they to were LW. The Escape sled was full of add ons that no other sled came with in 03 with the exception of the 600 RMK 144 which also came with perc reverse. Oh 1 more thing the sled came with, the chain case was rolled and was LW. Overall the best stock Polaris Edge chassis ever built. If you can find that year and you want to stay with the Edge chassis it is the one to get.

No idea if my post is the Ti or not, but it has been replaced under recall as well. This is the first I've heard of the chaincase being rolled though. I did notice a small bump in the belly pan, but I've never looked that close at another Edge chassis. The only thing I had ever heard about the chain case was the Phantom thing, has something to do with the way the brake disc is mounted apparently? I'm with you 100% though on this being the best Edge chassis sled Poo ever built, and I've heard it from a lot of others as well. I know I love mine!

Edge vs Escape

Don't forget- the 800 twin issues them years
THEY ALL HAD BAD CRANK Bearing Problems. Generally on the PTO side
It is not a matter of "If " this will go out- it is a matter of WHEN it will get you!

My friend had a 04 verticle escape and he blew up 3 motors in one year. One from a lost bolt in the engine, another because of some oil pump issue, and another from a broken crank. All were polaris' falt. He now rides a 04 800 rev that gets owned by our 06 700 RMK.

If i were you i would just get a 05-06 RMK. They are way better then the edge chassis and if you look hard enough you can find a good deal on one for about the same price as some want for a 03-04. Just make sure you take good care of the engine, perticuarly the crank. Indy dan has a some great info every one should read. http://www.snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52811

All the Poo 800 twins are prone to crank issues. And it's not the bearings so much as the cases. There are things you can do to help though- get an SLP or similar push arm, SLP or similar torque arm (indydan doesn't like these, I figure it can't hurt and put it on anyways), get a good engine base plate (SLP makes a decent one, 1200psi and someone else who's member name I'm forgetting make a better one), and finally (and most expensively) send your crank and cases out to someone like indydan for a big bearing and line bore. There are tons of places that will do the big bearing mod cheaper than indydan does, but he spends a lot more time making sure everything is right so that you don't have problems down the road again. It's not unheard of for someone to blow a crank with a big bearing mod either! Also make sure you keep your clutches clean and have the primary balanced.

escape seats are held on by snaps and yes they are much more comfy than the Vert EDGE seats.

a pic of the lw bogies before i removed them.

Could have been a dealer changeout and not a factory option. I just don't recall that being a choice when I sno checked mine. I could very well be wrong though. I may still have the broshure from that year. I'll see if I can't find it.

The Edge Escapes did NOT have a rolled chaincase....... The 900RMK and the Pro X had the rolled case.

I would look for an for a late model 800 Edge Escape, but if a 900RMK came by for cheap enough, go with the IQ900. The Escapes are good snowmobiles, I really liked/like mine, but the IQ's are better.
