Edge Pull Spring Install

Hay guys, need a hand, My pull start rope broke on my edge, so thinking hay I can fix this, so took the housing off, all good so far, now then removed the center bolt holding the pull start spring in, and whoa it all un-wound, so can anyone advise

whats the trick to get the spring reinstalled and how many winds does it require

have an 04 edge

thanks much, Dave

it sucks...you have to wind spring up on bench, then clamp it sideways with a small vise grip, then carefully place spring back in housing with outer tab in knotch, remove vise grip..very very slowly.......Now with as much rope as you can wrapped about the pull spool, and the rope through the hole, place spool back on shaft without disturbing the spring while hooking the inner spring tab on the spool, fun part, then replace bolt and pull rope out as far as it will go, check to see if it all returns and works good, then replace on motor. Pull rope out as far as possible (plugs out, mag off) and determine where to tie off the handle for good return ect.. Job is a total bi%&h a new spring comes all banded togeather btw

I did this on an old 500 wedge sled. first and last time for me, almost get it rewound, then ahh ****, it comes flying back apart. I'd just pick up a new spring and save the headache. I replaced my pull rope on my 04' 800 about a month ago, and managed not to unwind the spring, soo much easier. I used that super strong pull rope that 4Z sells on this forum ( http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=232378&highlight=pull+rope )so I don't have to do it again anytime soon.

This sounds like mission impossible bomb building stuff, now since I suck at clamping and winding, can you buy a pre-wound spring? or some way to not have to do the wind and pop thing....?

Thanks much Guys

Yes factory spring comes all wound up nice with a little metal clip, ya put it in and then c a r e f u l l y unclip it and re assemble. just dont let it sprong or ur back where ya started. Freindly dealer prob wont charge much to do it 4 ya if you bring the housing in
