ecoboost vs 5.0

i can't post in the f-150 thread cause i'm just a basic...:face-icon-small-dis....but my son bought a platinum ecoboost about a month ago and i bought an xlt with the 5.0 two weeks ago....his is a crew cab, mine a super cab because i needed a longer bed than the 5.5 he has....he has 3.55 gears, mine is 3.73...his mileage around town is between 14-15, mine is 16-17....road trips where we're mostly on cruise control, his best is 19.5, where mine is 22.5....around town mileage is largely influenced by the driver, so that maybe accounts for that difference....but out on the road, with the cruise set, that's just the machine.....comparisons were run at 60 mph....just my truck gets 17-17.5 at 75 mph.....22.5 at 60 mph....65 still gets me 21-22, but anything over 65, it drops off fast.....he was thinking he would get better mileage on the road, hence the ecoboost...had he known what real world would give him, he wished he'd bought the 6.2 and taken a little less mileage in exchange for the power and fun factor of the 6.2....he says next year is a raptor with the 6.2

I went with the 5.0 as well. I have the luxory of a duramax if I need some heavy towing, but my dealer said exactly what you stated here. 5.0 is getting same if not better mileage, it is rated close for what the ecoboost is towing. I got 820 km for my first tank of fuel(that was not easy driving either, lots of 110-150 km/h to test it out.) Over all I love the truck. Ride is great, sure glad I went with it. Keep us posted with any more results.

Interesting note on the mileage figures.

I just looked at the ford web site and the highest tow rating I see for the 5.0 is 9,300 and the eco is 11,200 so the eco is supposed to tow 20% more.

The 6.2 can tow 11,100 so close enough there and rated for 12/16 on mpg.

One big reason I would go with the Ecoboost is that the aftermarket is getting some impressive numbers from tuners. Just like a lot of diesel tuners, you can wick up the power just a bit and get a nice bump in mileage as long as you drive in a manner that would produce better mileage. Of course if you are like me and stoke up my Cummins, burn the tires a bit, then your MPG will not materialize.

I'm very happy with my Ecoboost.

I have a 2011 Supercrew FX4 with 3.73s and the 5.5 box.

I only have 700 miles on it, but made a 200 mile trip the other day going between 60-70 MPH (rural two lane), with 20 miles of dirt forest service road and got a little over 21 MPG.

On the interstate at 75 MPH with windier and hilly conditons and larger 275/70R18 tires I got about 18 MPG.

Absolutely love the torque. Feels very diesel like to me and nothing at all like my 04 5.3 or our 01 6.0 Chevy work truck.

I can't wait to see how it pulls a trailer. I'm very happy with the mileage as it matches my 01 and 03 Cummins with much cheaper fuel and maintenance.

The only thing I like better about the V8s is the sound.

As a side note, the instant fuel economy gauge is very helpful in improving your mileage.

And as for the fuel mileage diff, check both your speedos via GPS. Mine reads almost dead on with the larger tires, meaning the speedo read high with the stock tires.

Good info. I'm about to update my '08 and thought the Eco would be the way to go. If the 5.0 is doing that well on fuel, I may be able to get some decent discounts on an '11 as the '12's should be hitting the lot shortly.

I do have to say one thing, the minute you have a smaller motor producing more power under boost then a larger NA motor that boosted motor is working alot harder to produce that power. This is coming from someone with some insight with these motors as I currently work at the Ford Romeo Engine plant where we currently build the 4.6, 6.2, Shelby motors as well as machine the 5.0 blocks. One of the main reasons the Eco has a higher tow rating is that the curb weight of the truck is less then the 5.0/6.2. Its not always effected based on power, if that were the case I'm sure my diesel could pull a semi trailer.

this is absolutely true and we are finding out the same here that the 5.0 is getting better mileage than the ecoboost. It is better suited for the weight of the truck. Look at the difference between the gears in the o.p's post, 3.55 gears in the eco and 3.73 in the 5.0. the eco's being the higher gear should get better mileage. This is not the case, however and is probably attributed to the weight and how hard the engine has to work to push the vehicle along.
Sucks for us Ford faithful. They are kinda betting the farm on this ecoboost for mileage and the modular motor is showing it up right now.

Yes, your 100% correct. When the Eco boost first came out I went around and around with people on HCS about how I don't trust those motors for towing the weight that they advertise. That motor was originally attended to be used in the SHO, Edge and Explore but with the attention it got they figured they would throw them in the F150 as well. That new 5.0 is one bad motor, 7300rpm red line the highest revving V8 mass produced. Block has been tested by Ford Racing to handle over 1200hp. Have a friend with the Ford Racing supercharger in his mustang, making over 600hp and its his daily. Really incredible package. Unfortunately I don't know many people with the 5.0 in there trucks with us being out in the country most of the guys have diesels or the big 6.2.

take that 5.0 up to 10,000 feet and watch that eco blow by it like its standing still.

my friend has a 5.0 and he says his 5.4 would get better mpgs and lug better pulling big loads he uses his truck daily no grocery getter here and who drives 60 mpg anyways. Hook a load to 5.0 and eco the is no comparision I have ridden in both with 10,000 lbs. The eco leaves the 5.0 in the dust.

I bought the Eco for real world power, pulling trailers, running through the mountains at altitude, locked into 4wheel drive for hundreds of miles on the highway and I run E-rated All-Terrains. It's the torque... That being said, the power to weight issue is real. When they are both unloaded.

The 5.0 will rev and pull hard, but it is a bit more unnerving when it down-shifts to the high revs it needs to make it's power on a snow covered highway pulling a 6000 pound trailer. The 5.0 is a good motor and will work great for most people.

The Eco gets the best MPG I have ever gotten in a full size pick-up in 35 years of driving and it's got about the best power delivery, but I still dang near bought a 6.2 for the power not the mileage. I always run after market tires so that is all relative.

I also have bought a ecoboost and love it it was bought in april 2011 and it was good as far as mileage.. And then it went to the crapper. so we took it to ford they remapped the computer with the new update and man did it help The power is up and city driving it get's 18-19 and freeway driving it gets 23-24 @ 80 mph. I just have a hard time pulling a big trailer with a small truck so i pull out the superduty for the hauling.. I know the wife likes the ecoboost more then her old 5.4... hope this helps

get the computer updated..
