Duramax Water in Fuel

Anyone ever get bad fuel with their Duramax? I have an 06 LBZ and was wondering what it ran like with water in the fuel. I think a got some on one of my fill ups on the way home from a trip towing my 27 inline trailer.

What it ran like with water in fuel??? Probably pretty SH**TY. Did your fuel filter light come on telling you there was water in fuel or did you open the pitcock on the water separater on you fuel filter and did water or diesel come out of it. I'm pretty sure everyone will agree how a diesel runs with water in fuel and that would be barely at all. Run a diesel additive that has a water remover especially in the winter.

Yep, definately runs like sh*t! Mine wouldnt even move. I have 2 of them, on the '10 the dash tells me water in fuel before I have any issues, the '09 doesnt give me any warning and just starts running like crap....I've had a lot of issues with water in fuel but thats a whole other story.

Well the truck is new to me and never had a Duramax before. So I had to learn on the fly. I was running along fine and then it started to smoke and lose power. This was at 70mph. I could put it to the floor and not gain much speed. Black smoke was coming out of the tailpipe. I ended up going to a gas station and putting some diesel 911 in the tank and toped off the tank with diesel fuel. It was running better at the point.

When I got home the I purchased a new fuel filter, air filter and installed. This is when I learned there was a drain on the bottom of the filter separator. Seems to be running fine now. My water in fuel lite never came on. Some wil say you could almost poor water on the sensor and it doesn't come on.

I have had 3 d maxes and have yet to see the water in fuel light. On my 2010 I pulled the sensor out and installed a billet plug instead.

Put some seafoam in your fuel tank, it works similar to fuel line antifreeze, but it is a cleaning agent as well and will clear it up in a hurry.

Will try that. Well the truck seems to be running fine now. Do you think I just got some fuel with moisture in it?

I would guess water in fuel. The factory sensor is garbage and never works, ever.

I also caution people on fuel treatments that emulsify water. You are allowing the water to enter the high pressure fuel system. Trust me a High pressure common rail can make 30,000 psi, imagine how well that water will lubricate your ultra tight tolerence fuel pump & injector.

On my 2nd Duramax. The first one was an '06 LBZ. I never found water in the filter trap but I can tell you that the truck runs terrible if the filter is in need of changing. It feels as though the tranny is slipping and motor has lost power. I was nervous my tranny was going. Changed my filter and it ran awesome again. Plan on changing your filter every 6 months or so (depending on your usage).

You should also carry a filter, strap wrench and WIF wrench in the truck on long trips!

Already in the works. The strap wrench is in my portable tool box that goes in the trailer and I will be purchasing a few extra filters.
