driving jackson hole to west jellystone.. got a question!

ill be driving jackson to jellystone..

thru victor, driggs, hwy 32 thru drummond into ashton to hwy 20..

my question is, is there a good sized grocery store anywhere along the way that i can stock up for the week and not get bent over???

thanks!

Are you pulling a trailer?

Teton pass is closed to any trailers, 200.00 fine:mad:

no trailers from Jackson to Victor Hwy 22:mad:

you will have to go around through Alpine Wyoming then take 26 through Swan Valley, then the route of your choice

Jackson, Alpine, Idaho Falls and Rexburg all have large chain stores. any more question, feel free to pm me. Dave

Is Piney Pass closed for trailers from Victor to Swan Valley?? If not, that's the route I'd go. Grocery store in Ashton & Driggs also

No, Pine Creek pass is open, but you still can't get from Wilson/Jackson to Victor with a trailer, not over Teton Pass, so how would you get to Victor? I live in Swan Valley and I don't know of a way to do that? not unless you go around through Alpine.....................then you could go Swan Valley, Victor, Driggs ect

faster to go from swan Valley to Rerie to Rigby, to Rexburg, Ashton, Island park, and West.:beer;

We usually hit the Smith's on the south end of Jackson when up there for work. Otherwise just hit the grocery store in Victor or Driggs.

I concur.........Even with dry roads in the Summer you can't make it from Swan Valley through Victor faster than you can going to Ririe and up. Once you are in Rexburg you can hit a grocery store, or just buy groceries in IP. You can also hit the grocery store in Alpine, but it isn't any cheaper than IP would be.

Pretty sure he is flying in and renting up in west. So the Teton Pass Victor Driggs Ashton route is the fastest for em. Best deal will be Browlims in Driggs It will be on the left side of the road about a block before you pass through the only stop light in town. Lots cheaper than anything in Ashton, or up in West.IMO

No trailer, this is the way to go (careful over the pass), Broulims a good place to shop. If trailer, the Ririe, Rexburg route is best, Broulims and Albertsons in Rexburg. Have fun, be safe.

While were on the subject of travel, we will be heading to McCall ID to pickup a sled over the Xmas break. Traveling from Calgary AB. Would really appreciate some local knowledge for planning the route thru passes etc.
Pulling a 2 place open trailer.
Thanks

Jesse,

What Dam Dave & WFO said on the travel route...

But WFO is full of chit about buying groceries in Island Park. He should know better. Anyone that has been on SW forums for as long as WFO has knows that there is NO MILK AVAILABLE IN ISLAND PARK!!! Just ask SNOWBLIND. :D

Buy your food in Rexburg if you end up going that way. Buy it in Driggs or Ashton if you are able to go over Teton Pass in a rental like you did last year.

why not just rent a 4 stroke sled and ride through the park into west... save you alot of time...

Winter travel on highway 33 or 32 through teton valley is crazy. they are the worst roads ever... even a 10mph breeze produces white outs...

Your not kidding about being careful on Teton pass!!

About 15 years ago we were out in Colorado, and the snow sucked real bad. So we decided to deadhead it to West. We never went through the park before to get to west so we decided to drive through the south entrance to the park to west.

Obviously a no go, but it looked good on a map so we backtracked to Jackson Hole and again looked at the map.

Looked like Teton pass was the way to go. We head out of Jackson, and see the signs "No trailers". Well how bad could it be anyway!

We started out in the worst conditions imaginable. about 8 inches of snow on the road, and it was snowing very hard, and snowing harder as we reached the top of the pass.

We had four 4-place trailers and rigs, and I had my Explorer with no trailer.

We started down and began to slide, and slide, and slide. I was leading i the Exploder and there were times that I had to accelerate to keep infront of the rigs behind me as they were sliding faster than I was going.

It seemed like hours before we got to the bottom, and luckily nobody went of fthe road, but there was a few very close calls.

After scraping off about a pound of crap out of my shorts, we continued on to West, can't remember the roads and exactly which route we took, but it was an aweful event.

DO NOT TAKE A TRAILER OVER THE PASS!!

LOL

LOL

i spent two summers driving semi trucks over that pass... i carried chains into july... I remember one june it put down like 2 feet of snow, hauling 70000 lbs of trees into jackson over the pass... an experience i never want to do again... hind site i should have just gone around...

Guys - I spent days, maybe weeks last year telling oonighttrain it was OK to drive over Teton Pass...as long as he was careful and wasn't pulling a trailer. Don't go undoing my confidence building seminars...he paid good coin for this expertise. :D

Phatty - Glad you made it over. I grew up about 3/4 mile up the pass on the north side of the road. My folks still live there. Before they put in the ramps there was on average 1-2 trucks that went off that last big left hand turn per year. One year we heard a truck explode in the middle of the night. That was wild.

yeah... ;)

dont get me wrong, you couldnt have driven a needle up my arse with a sledgehammer last year when i drove it for the first time.. but, ill be fine this time!! ill be in a chevy.. ;)

by the way, no trailer!! im renting.. looks like ill just hit the store in driggs..
hope there meat doesnt look like it does at the store in west jelly.. that stuff looks like its been in the cooler for months..

That pass is sweet in a good handling car in the summer, but it has some pretty good pucker factor in the winter. Like Phatty said with the wind watch it, if its blowing over 10mph take the long way. Ive been driving that area headed to targhee back in the day and a gust hit us and just slid us right over into the oncoming lane. Brolims has decent steaks.

Scott,

You crack me up!!! Who in their right mind would worry about milk while on a sledding vacation in IP or West???? I guess I can't give you to much crap though, you are one of the two best DD's I personally know :) Speaking of which, do you still have an extra set of keys from a Jackson trip? Now that was FUNNY :face-icon-small-ton

Oooooo,

You should look into renting a sled in jackson and riding through the park like Phatty said. I would think it would save you some time, would be a pretty ride, and you wouldn't have to rent a vehicle! It would be interesting anyways! Reminds me of a vacation in the early eighties. Stayed in IP, left the cabin at -17 degrees in the morning. If it got warmer than -5 all day I would be surprised. Somewhere in the middle of the park my dads sled (Yamaha 440) burned down. I was maybe ten years old and I drew the short stick and rode on that thing being towed for a lot of miles. By the time we got back to IP I was pretty much frozen! That was the last time I was in the park on a sled, and the memories make me not want to ever do it again!!!

h2otoyz and I were heading back from Afton, WY one time and took the route from Swan Valley through Victor & Driggs to Ashton. Looked shorter on the map so away we go. Dodge Cummins pulling a 4 place enclosed, it starts dumping snow after we leave Swan Valley. We get touring along and it's snowing and blowing harder and harder. We just pass through the last little $hithole before Ashton and the crap hits the fan. We're headed uphill around a curve and the road is completely blown in. Snowbank starts pulling us hard right so Brock shuts 'er down. So, now we're trying to figure out exactly where the hell we are and where to call a tow truck. Figure we're about 13 or 14 miles from Ashton so we call there. Tow truck guy isn't sure he can make it because he's only got a 2wd deck. We suck him into it and he heads out. After what it seemed hours, two locals out on a booze cruise in a blinding blizzard come along and give us a tow. Took 8 or 10 attempts and we final get out. Get a mile up the road and we meet the tow truck. Pay him $100 for coming out and we're headed for Bozeman.

Note to self, never take that route again. Go to Rexburg then north.
