drilling outfoor rails for drainage/traction ?

my foot rails not sure what they are called, get filled with snow on some days and get slippery.i was thinking of making a pattern and with a big drill putting holes all along them..i dont have tools to cut out squares but was thinking this might help..anybody done something like this before ?+

Drilling a lot of holes in them will weaken them.

I did around 6 1/1/2 holes on each side, didn't help much so i ended up going to better boards. X2 will weaken the structure.

I drilled 6 holes in mine (each side) 3/4" in size. Did not weaken them at all, but I would not go any bigger than that. They help a little, but not like the better boards.
