Double base gasket mod????

I was talking to a very well know mod shop up in idaho last week about putting my RKT head on my M1000. He said that they have had great results with the head and with putting an extra base gasket on. I guess it changes the port timing just a fraction. My question is. Has any one on here done this? Does it really work? If I did this do you have to buy and replace 2 new base gaskets or can you just put the new one on top of the old one?
Thanks for your help.

base gasket mod

You can place them on top of eachother, I wouldhow ever use some silicone gasket maker on two mating surfaces of the gaskets.

Raises your port timing slightly,,,,,,,,even better it lowers your compression ?

With the most recent studies of the gas we buy that's likely a good thing. Some of the latest sample testing show much of the gas in the WEST is way over 10% Alcohol, average of 33% in some recent Oregon testing! So effectively the resistance to deto is up, but might be lean or leaner running on this poor fuel and lower compression won't hurt any of the 1000's leaner spots.

15 h.p. kit

I would call Kelsey and ask him about it. I have the 15 hp kit for my m-8 which is just a thicker base gasket he sells with the head. He may have one for the 1000 that way you are not glue two together.

I would also like to know more, I am about to put on a 14.5:1 cyl. head. If a new base gasket is benificial it is not all that much more work. TTT

for those contemplating this mod, you should first decide on raising the port timing/cylinder height with the gasket(s) (or shim), THEN talk to the head supplier you want to use, and let them know what you are thinking about. if you do it in reverse, you will have a head cut for one, or stock base/cyl/port height.

then you will raise the height of the cylinder by installing the shim or double base gasket, effectivly lowering your compresion. (which is why you put the head on for in the first place... more compression, better cooling, and more hp).

so now even though you may have ordered a tighter than stock clearance and squish head, raising the height of the cylinder just reduced what you had to possibly less than stock compression ratios.

this could possibly negate all you were trying to gain, or even cause a loss in power from what you had to begin with. food for thought. ski

That was my next question. Why would you a aftermarket head to raise compression and a double base gasket just to lower it?

Like said above you should have the head built with the understanding that it would be used with a thicker base gasket, that way builder can figure that in.
