Dog Pulling...K9 Keg pull contest

So I just found out today about a local contest in Whitefish for Friday night. It's a keg pulling contest for dogs. http://greatnorthernbrewing.com/read_news.php?id=58

Wish I had more time...my pup has never had a harness or pulling practice of any kind...but he does love me...and he does what it takes to get to me.

Going to enter this....it's a 1st annual....winner gets a keg. If Drake gets distracted, oh well....but we'll get it a shot!!

If anyone is around...say hello. We have Golden Retrievers...red ones. Myself and our female will be at the finish line encouraging Drake! :)

Yeah...I don't care if he wins...would be nice to have a KEG of GNB though!!!

Just gonna have fun :D

It's going to be interesting for sure. He is now officially entered. :)

We use their harness and sled set up. The keg is put on a sled that has some sort of skis on the bottom of it.

We go for fitting and sign in at 6...pulls start at 7.

Good luck and let us know how it went.

Wish I lived closer. I have a lab built like a brick sh*t-house who'd pull a humvee to get to kibble. Plus, I love beer.

Trying to figure out a strategy now. No doubt there will be sled dogs entered who have pulling experience.

Drake is a big lover at about a solid 118 lbs. He really has no clue on his size, he thinks he's a lap dog. :face-icon-small-sho For being big, he is fast. He turns 2 at the end of the month.

He loves treats and squeaky toys...so plan to have those. Just not sure whether to be with him at the start so he doesn't break early and get a penalty...then try to run with him....or to put him in a sit/stay and keep his attention, then encourage him to the finish. There are going to be lots of distractions. Decisions.

not that I know anything about dogpulling, but would think 2 ropes, one on each side of the dog would be better if it's legal. Then the dog can use his back the way it's ment to be used without a rope on top...

That's the way the harness system is set up....2 ropes.

Just came back inside from doing a crude test. Tried 2 different *kids sleds* that we have. Really would've helped to have a *real* harness. He can easily pull me, pulls the hubby with a bit more work (he's over the 170 that Drake will need to pull). Started out with a bit of bucking bronco stuff, so we adapted the way things were tied.

This definitely isn't as easy as it sounds. When I'm in the sled, he just wants to play with me as I'm on the ground.....but the hubby did get him moving and then he easily pulled. I'm going to have to find something to put into one of the sleds, and do some work with him tomorrow.

Tough for him when he knows about being tied (not that he gets tied often), and having to stay put. I'm sure it goes against what he knows.

Strategy is going to be key here......just gotta figure that out.

LOL......I hope to video....well, have others video. I'm going to have my hands full on this.

We didn't try any "bribes" tonight...like a squeaky toy, or a treat, or beer. He does love hoppy beer....might have to have it all.
