Does the 2008 M8 have an electronic reverse? Ive heard that there is some problems with the diamond drive on some of the older models is that true? And if you took the reverse completely out would that solve all the problems?

No...it's mechanical...And very few problems in general....Maintenance is the key here....Flushing and changing the Diamond Drive fluid both in the fall and spring is mandatory....Not a big deal, 30 minute job max....

Reverse is VERY useful on the sled....Don't eliminate it...

08's have mechanical reverse that has and electronic servo that actuates the reverse with the push of a button. not a true electronics reverse like the 09, 2010, and the doo, poo r.e.r/perc.

When you say Electric?? Do you meen when the sled runs backwards?? If so no!! the 08 is Mechanical.. The DD did have problems if not miantained.. Oil should be changed a couple times a year to check for metal fragments.. Not hard to pull apart to rebuild!! You can remove the DD and install a DD Light From BDX. Removes all reverse parts and sheds 10lbs!!! Is the sled new to you? Have you been into the DD yet?

I don't actually have an M8 yet. I just sold my Yamaha Nytro and i'm having a hard time deciding whether to get a brand new 2008 and put on SLP Performance Kit, or buy the 2009 and ride it with just a can. Any help on what to do? I think I would just get rid of the reverse though, looses 10 pounds and I don't really want to worry about it.

Buy the 09.... Its a totally different sled than the 08. Different skid, tunel, lighter weight and a couple other things. I think you would be happier in the long run...good luck.

All depends on how much you want to spend really. I personally did the '08 for SUBSTANTIALLY less than you can get '09's for. The only real differences on the '09 are engine reverse (saves a few pounds for sure, most of the rest is hype if you ask me as '09 DD's have their problems too), powerclaw track, the rear bumper/tunnel setup, and 2 wheel. If, and only if, you are comparing Sno-Pro's then the '09 also has the telescoping riser. For the price difference I personally got the '08 and added telescoping riser, 2 wheel kit, '09 rear bumper/tunnel mods, '10 seat, and will still be putting on a Powerclaw. Sled for $7k + ~$20 for 2 wheel kit, ~$175 telescoping rise, ~$160 for bumper/tunnel, ~$240 for seat (would do this also to an '09). That puts me at $7600 and Powerclaw will send it to around $8200, or under $8k if you don't count the seat which I would add to an '09 too. I will have everything an '09 does for cheaper than I could get an '09 out of the crate other than the ~6 pounds from the engine reverse. I also geared mine down to 55/65 and will be installing SLP pipe which should have it much closer to a '10 for right at $9k total. I don't mind doing the work and can spread the cost out some. On the hill my '08 with the above stuff will outperform an '09 and should be close to a '10 while still comparing new out of the crate sleds.

Without spending the bucks to go to the light drive on an '08 the only real thing you could do is remove the solenoid and such from the reverse which would save you probably 3-4 pounds. If you EVER use reverse that wouldn't be worth it if you ask me.

The only difference in the skid from 08-09 is rails and 2-wheel kit. 08 still has the fox float skid.

That being said, if you're terribly worried about the reverse, get the 09, but there's nothing to be worried about on the 08 diamond drive.

tunnel, snow evacuation holes are ALOT different (better) on the 09-10 than the 08. and the rear tunnel extension snowflap/rear bumper prone to breaking debacle, mech reverse prone to breaking, no telescopic steering.... big differences. by the time you do all the updates, you might have well at least bought the 09. we did the math, had the opportunity for the 08, 09, 10 just a few weeks ago. opted for the 09 for the upgrades, and the price difference in the 2010's. just my .02 ski
