Doctors said Matt Potratz would probably never ride again........

Hey guys,

Back in March it looked like I would probably never ride again. In fact, docs were unsure if I would ever function normally again. But, after 4 surgeries, 100+ days in hospitals, and 6 months of and ongoing physical therapy, Jan 1...10 months to the day after my avalanche, I got to smell the burning of sonoco race fuel and hit the snow on my FIRST RIDE aboard my turbo even!!! I am so thankful to be telling this story! I first and foremost must thank God for answering hundreds of prayers, next to family, friends, and all of you guys, and then the crew at St. Alphonsus hospital in Boise for helping me heal and believe I could be Matt again! Thankyou to all!
A little story about the gear Im wearing in the photos..my sponsors were awesome! Fly Helmets showed up in the hospital with this helmet and Kirk from HMK sent over this outerwear to Boise just to cheer me up and let me know they care. Then Tom from 509 hooked me up with a set of new Aviator goggles and they are awesome! Also, Ray from Black Diamond Extreme sent out a right handed brake kit so throttle and brake are on the same side since I cant use my left arm.
Ryan and Wendy Rogers let me hang out at their cabin for a couple days and joined me on the ride along with Tim & Dan Bieker and family. Tim and Dan were there the day of avalanche and helped get me out to where the helicopter could get to us. I also ran into Jeremy Kinzer on the trail...he was the first one on the slope when the avy occured. They were all almost as excited as I was that I was able to make the 14 mile maiden voyage! So, after $4,000+ in repairs to my turbo sled, and around $1 million in repairs to my body, heres some pics!.. Thanks for all your support Snowesters!

Dont worry guys...I still have my left arm! Its still dead & very limited in how much its allowed to move until my nerves regenerate some. So, just to be safe its in my sling against my base layer then strapped to my body with yep! red Duct tape! lol Then my coat sleeve is tucked back inside the coat.

Matt, you truly are an inspiration to us all! glad to see you back in action buddy!

ease

take that stuff easy. congrats though. back when i got out of the hospital i had to do the same thing. suprising how much slower and weaker i was just happy to be about 90%. L3 is gone replaced by doner leg bone and plate

I was excited to see you out their Matt! Just goes to show how far you have came, and that your spirits are high. (Noticed that in the truck on the way back to the cabin)

Each time I read this....Matt, you are one of those rare individuals that exceeds the triumph of this in many ways spiritually, physically, & emotionally.....

Persistence

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

Pesistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

-Calvin Coolidge

Hey Matt,
I am glad that you are back out there, nothing like having some independence after all that you have been through.I too am a rider with I won't say disabilities but I'm a little damaged.I am still hurting myself, over Christmas I used my face for brakes after a climb that threw me off as I went over the top.I have one very weak arm.

My spinal cord was crushed in a motorcycle accident and the Doctors say that I have damage but I still live my life as though there is nothing wrong.I have really not changed my life much,I still go to work every day,I own a couple of crane trucks and through these slow economic times have kept working a truck myself.I could have a employee running my truck but I am too stubborn to do that. When things do pick up I will put my other truck back on the road and hire someone but I will never give up!

You have one thing going for you that I don't and that is you are still young and stand a better chance on recovery as the medical break throughs are happening everyday.
I do honestly believe in your lifetime there will be some medical miricles happen that can make you better.

I am trying to put together a ride or two this season with money made from these rides going to spinal cord research. It has been tough for me to do on my own because I am trying to keep my business running, support my family and spend as much time riding as I can.I am still playing catch up after time in hospital and recovery time too.I am also pushing avalanche training after last years unfortunate deaths.

For me when I am riding it is the only time I feel like I guess you could call normal. It is only when I get off my sled that people notice that I have issues, but when I am on it I am just one of the boys, that is till I get stuck.
I will always try to get my self out first, stubborn as I am,but do have many friends that always come to help when needed.

I do support Shoot for the Cure,a organization that helps people and are looking for a cure on both sides of the border for spinal cord injuries. If you are interested in helping out in any way let me know.
If you ever need someone to talk to or want to ride please give me a PM and I will gladly help in any way I can.

I first heard about you from Amber Holt and she is very inspired by you,I recieved a PM from her that brought a tear to my eyes after reading it about you.
I saw you made a post on my thread on handicapped riders, you see how many there are?All fighters, enjoying life to the max,so never say die and never give up.
I look forward to watching you recover in the next little while.
By the way thats one nice Cat you are riding there and some great photos
Take Care Matt & keep up the fight.

Cheers,
Dave Renshaw

Good stuff Matt! Way to go on the recovery, now since you got the first sweet sweet smell it can't be long until you want more:D
My grandmother said once to me when I was riding after an accident (still with rivets sticking out of my foot) "You're to dumb to know that you're hurt!":D:D
Keep it up

Glad to hear your back in the saddle. Bet it felt great. Hope you have a great 2010. EW
