That means you Washington and Oregon riders that ride McCall too. We need everyone we can get there.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Payette N. F. to Host Public Meeting on Proposed Special Order for
Management of 2011-2012 Winter Snow Season

McCall, ID - The Payette National Forest (PNF) proposes to issue a one year Over-Snow season Special Order that would continue the restrictions to over-snow motorized use currently in effect, with three proposed changes. The proposed changes are:

· Granite Mountain: 6127 acres to be closed to over-snow motor vehicle use from January 15 – March 30 for the 2012 season.

· Hitt Mountain: 764 acres to be opened to over-snow motor vehicle use for the entire 2011-2012 winter season.

· Squaw Point: 1234 acres to be opened to over-snow motor vehicle use for the entire 2011-2012 winter season.

The PNF Recreation Program invites the public to a meeting at the Supervisor’s Office from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on September 28, 2011 to share information and discuss the proposal with forest recreation specialists and managers. Jane Cropp, Recreation Program Manager will make a short presentation about the proposal at 6:30 p.m.

451,200 acres are currently closed to over-snow vehicle use. The modifications above would adjust the number of total acres closed to over-snow motorized use to 455,329 acres for the 2011-2012 winter season. This figure does not include the acres within the Payette National Forest portion of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, which are closed by law to over-snow motorized use.

The Forest worked with the Winter Recreation Forum, a McCall-based group representing motorized and non-motorized winter recreation enthusiasts, to draft a recommendation for the Payette Forest Supervisor to consider. This Special Order is a result of those recommendations.

The Supervisor’s office is located at 800 West Lakeside Avenue in McCall, ID. Please call Jane Cropp at 634-0757 for information about the upcoming meeting or the proposed Special Order.

Winter Recreation Forum Agreement—Granite, Slab, 76, Squaw Point and Hitt Mountain

Members of the Winter Recreation Forum (hereafter called the Forum), after careful deliberation, have come to agreement upon the following management direction for winter recreation travel within the Granite Mountain Area. The Forum intends that this agreement, in its entirety, will be implemented by the U.S. Forest Service, Payette National Forest (PNF) utilizing an administrative order. The Forum further intends that the administrative order will be renewed annually by the PNF and the Forum until its new Winter Travel Plan is implemented.

The attached aerial photo image shows the boundaries of the area the Forum agrees to have seasonally dedicated as a special use snowcat and backcountry skiing area, closed to motorized access (snowmobiling) during those periods when the snowcat skiing operation is active. The remaining area, including Granite Bowl and the Twin Lakes Bowl, is to be open to shared use for both motorized and non-motorized winter recreation travel.

Brundage Cat Skiing will establish a new groomed trail adjacent to and to the north of the Boulevard for use by snowmobiles and will maintain it as required when runs are made by their groomer. This trail will alleviate possible conflict between snowcat and snowmobile traffic.

The areas will be closed to accommodate snowcat skiing from January 15 to March 30. Outside that timeframe, the area will be opened for shared use.

The boundaries of the snowcat and backcountry skiing area will be reviewed and adjusted as needed on an annual basis with consensus from all active and present members of the Forum.

The areas known as Slab and 76 will remain open for shared use for both motorized and non-motorized winter recreation travel. Members of the Forum agree they will continue to support such shared use and will not support modification of shared use status or exclusive use by any groups for Slab or 76 in the future.

Hitt Mountain and Squaw Point will be opened for shared use for both motorized and non-motorized winter recreation travel.

Costs associated with enforcement, including signage and maps, and other actions deemed necessary by the Forum will be borne by the Forum or other forms of funding that becomes available through the reasonable best efforts of individual or collective Forum members.

This agreement shall remain in place at least until the Forest has completed its Winter Travel Plan.

It appears that Twin lakes, and Granite Mtn upper ridge will continue to be open for riding. There will be a sled approved groomed trail to by-pass the lower now non-motorized portion of the mountain. Pretty much everything from the west shore of gooselake up to the upper valley of granite. This agreement opens up a few non-motorized areas however not popular it still shows that what was once non-motorized can be changed, and releases the desires of brundage to close slab butte. Honestly it's a pretty good trade. It's tough to see any area closed, but we really need to respect those boundries so we don't continue to appear as a outlaw sport in the area.

So why are they closing it for just a year? to see how it goes or what?
I honestly don't know where this area is and i ride cascade a lot.

closure

This has to be due to the fools that kept taking the gps trackers they kept handing out at the parking lot on the way to Brundage. Those bastards said they were for studying the wolverines. They came up to me almost every weekend and asked if we would take one with us. Finally after turning them down a dozen times they stopped asking. But there still were the fools that would take them and give them back at the end of the day. They even started using some hot girls to ask. I tried telling everyone I saw in the lot to just give them back because they are going to get the area closed for us. People just aren't that smart and never learn. What do we need to do to get them to understand. I bet they will be back up there again this year. They have been there for the past two years.

Dont take the gps trackers with you, especially if you know you might end up somewhere you shouldnt! Don't be rude to the guy in the parking lot, just tell him no thank you and ride off. He will leave you alone....eventually ha

Take the GPS and toss it into the Brush and Run the bastards over!!!!!!

How did it end up? Are they done for now, or will this continue?

You know, a lot boils down to common sense. We had to ride pretty close to come "closed" areas last year to get out. We ride like we are on eggshells when around housing/people, STOP and let skiers/shoers go by or if they wave us by, idle around and wave. (Laugh quietly at the occasional dirty look.) Or TRY to laugh quietly at the ole yotch who had her silly little dog out on a SNOWMOBILE trail, when she saw us coming is was like a slapstick comedy, tripping over herself to get to her dog, dog tripping over her, etc. (And we were idling as soon as we saw her.) She must have thought we looked like a herd of evil satan sledders who were INTENT on running her dog over. Ending a day with that just keeps the smiles coming, lol. People like that are never going to understand or even try, so just move on......
I would love to see what the restaurants, gas stations, hotels, grocery stores, etc. all do if they had to go a winter with no snogopeople income. I bet there would be support for us terrible people.
Bunny huggers buying two gallons of gas for their subarus and the occasional granola bar isn't going to keep McCall alive for long.
What was this post about?......:)

This is what gets us a bad reputation

I was concerned too that the information they get from the gps units would be used against us. The gps units costs them about $100 each and if they are thrown away then we are bad asses to them and their conclusions might be tainted.

Also consider that if they don't have good information then they will "assume" that we are upsetting the breeding of the wolverines and close off all the areas that we now have and use. NOT IF they can prove it but only on the assumption. IF they do have good data that show there is no relationship between our riding areas and the animals, then they will move on.

One of the their helpers working the traps offered the opinion to one of us that the wolverine has the personality that they don't give a rip about anyone or anything other than food and sex. I think the data show that to be true so far and supports us. Carry the gps units and turn them in so there is good data for our side of the equation too.

jmho.

Spud.

I agree 100% but it makes me feel better to say ( RUN THEM OVER) LOL. IMO I think that there is no reasoning with these types of people. They are the majority when it comes to (hugging the trees and animals). It makes it hard for our sport to survive.
The funny thing is that we understand what they enjoy, but they don't understand what we enjoy!!
